Once seen simply as the gateway to the Turkish Riviera, Antalya is today very much a destination in its own right. Situated directly on the Gulf of Antalya (Antalya Körfezi), the largest Turkish city on the western Mediterranean coast is both classically beautiful and stylishly modern. It boasts the wonderfully preserved ancient district of Kaleiçi – literally 'within the castle' – a splendid Roman-era harbour and one of Turkey's finest museums.
Boutique hotels have sprung up in Antalya in recent years like mushrooms after rain and are of an international standard and good value. For partygoers, there are a number of excellent bars and clubs, while the opera and ballet season at the Aspendos amphitheatre continues to draw critical attention.
