Most importantly, Athens is a home to one of the biggest universities (been there done that) in the south-east of the United States, the University of Georgia. UGA is the first state-chartered university, the oldest and largest of Georgia's institutions of higher learning, and the oldest public university in the US.
Heard of REM and B52s? Well they all started in Athens, playing in the local bars. With more that 80 bars in the downtown area, Athens is one of the hottest university towns in the country. This probably helped in making UGA #1 party university in the US, two years in a row.
With its distinctive architecture, UGA campus is one of the most beautiful in the states. It will take you roughly one hour to walk from the North campus, filled with historical buildings, to the South Campus, which is a home to modern architecture and buildings.
Just like everywhere else in the American South, Football is HUGE. The university stadium, called Sanford Stadium, can hold as many people as Camp Nou, with as many people tailgating outside the stadium during the games.
Down below, you can see some of the beautiful photos of the city of Athens, as well as the photos of the UGA campus. Enjoy!
