Seven days of academic environment, controversial issues, heated debates and negotiations, participants from all over the world, challenging committees, Palace of the Parliament, important figures in the political field as speakers, socials and diplomatic parties: welcome to the magic of Bucharest International Student Model United Nations Conference! From the outside, BISMUN Conference appears to be a successful incredible event and we are glad that our participants enjoy it at its fullest. But, from the inside, achieving the success BISMUN has amongst youth is not an easy task to fulfill. Behind the spectacular magic of BISMUN, there is more than one wizard. In fact, it is an entire community of young, ambitious and determined wizards, who work full time in order to organize this Conference. The challenge of organizing BISMUN is demanding and requires a lot of effort, time, commitment, passion and patience from the organizers and volunteers who want to make everything perfect. But, after all, all this experience is more than worth it!
In 2017, BISMUN will be at its ninth edition. Over the last eight years, almost two thousand students come from all over the world in Bucharest for what is the biggest MUN event in South-Eastern Europe. The BISMUN Conference also has managed to get noticed by promoting high standards of quality in organizing and conducting the event, ensuring relevant academic experience for participants and strengthening institutional and academic partnerships with major institutions in Romania. The main organizing team is the executive committee. Besides them, each department is composed by other members from the UN Youth Association of Romania and other volunteers. Each of them has specific tasks to fulfill, deals with deadlines, stress, sleepless nights, but working all together and having fun alongside eases this process. Not to mention that the satisfaction at the end of the event cannot be put into words!
That being said, the team's responsibility to deliver is huge this year, as it is in every year: “Last year we had a great BISMUN. Over two hundred students traveled to Bucharest and debated a difficult theme: United Against Terrorism, Reaching Global Consensus. We also had the Counterterrorism Committee for the first time, which gave a new dimension to BISMUN. With this year's Conference we will try to implement another new Committees for BISMUN, such as the United Nations Environment Programme. We think we will have an even better conference in 2017”, said UN Youth Association of Romania's president, ValentinFlorea.
The theme for BISMUN 2017 will be again a challenging one: “Multiculturalism in the United Nations - Accepting Differences for the Common Good”. Its role is to bring into focus the importance of compromising and accepting difference for a common goal.„This year's theme is an issue that I am really passionate about. It is about accepting that there are no two human beings that are exactly the same on this whole planet, but it doesn’t mean that they cannot get along. It is about accepting the fact that humanity is in its highest point of evolution. It is about implementing the UN values, perhaps the best peace facilitator that we have. We must work better, improving it with ideas that reflect the intersection of all of the nations’ interests. I am certain, having participated in the last three BISMUN Conferences, that this year the delegates will once again have great and viable solutions towards the topics discussed and I will make sure that they have all the conditions to reach the best resolutions.”- said UN Youth Association of Romania's Vice-president, Vlad Drăguş, who will also be this year's BISMUN Secretary General.
One of the blueprints of BISMUN is the venue. Ever since its first edition, with two exceptions, the conference was hosted by one of the most impressive buildings in the world. The Palace of Parliament is the largest administrative building in the world used for civilian purposes, as well as the second largest administrative building overall, surpassed only by The Pentagon. The building currently houses the Romanian Chamber of Deputies (Lower House of Parliament) and the Romanian Senate (Upper House of Parliament). It is also the head-quarters of the Southeast European Cooperation Initiative (SECI) and it has been during the past decade a venue for an important number of international conferences and multilateral diplomatic forums.
Organizing such an important event is for sure not a piece of cake, but, it is not impossible. If we stay true to our beliefs that together, through hard work, knowledge and passion, we can achieve this goal, then we can be sure that BISMUN 2017 will be a success. This year's BISMUN will take place between 22ndand 27thof March, 2017. The application is still open, so we invite you all to register and join our BISMUN family and to open your minds and improve our world together!
