Have you had the thought New Year, a new career in your head since the start of 2018? And yet, you still haven’t done anything about it? Well, it’s not too late no matter what you might be telling yourself already. Making a positive change to your career can happen at any time of year, getting started now only helps to speed up the process!
So, what changes to your career can you make in 2018 to help better yourself?
Being Your OWN Boss
Isn’t this everybody’s dream? Being able to make their own living, unanswerable to a micro manager. You know the type, the kind of person who acts like they are ruling a small kingdom rather than managing a small marketing team.
A survey by the University of Phoenix revealed that, from a pool of 1,600 adults, 63 per cent of people in their 20s either owned their own business or wanted to one day. Those that were not already entrepreneurs, over half of them wanted to be in the future. So, why not be the part of this statistic that already runs your own business instead of simply hoping to one day?
Lots of people put off starting their own business because, let’s face it, they are terrified of failure. Do you really want that to be you? Of course, if you don’t feel ready to jump head first into the world of business just yet, you can always dip your toes with freelancing. This will allow to see how you manage your own clients, time and even finances before taking the full plunge.
Okay, so maybe you don’t want to leave your job or the traditional work structure at all. But, you would like to leave the traditional workplace. After all, in the age of the internet and smartphones is there any reason you have to be tied to an office at all? Surely not as long as the work still gets done.
Beth Pembrook started working from home once she starting working with a private foster agency, she told me:
“There’s an amazing freedom that comes being able to work at home. When I began fostering, I did it to make a difference. And I couldn’t exactly do that sat behind a desk until 5.30pm every day. My boss is great, very understanding; so, now I get to work at home 4 out of 5 days of the week. I go in for Monday catch up, but even then I get to leave at 3 pm to make sure I’m home for the kids. It’s the ideal way to work, honestly.”
Plenty of us have life situations that may make working at home a much better option, so why don’t more employers offer it? Perhaps they do, you simply haven’t asked! Expensive and long commutes can be a thing of the past if you work out the right deal with your employer and make it work for both of you.
Hunting a Better Salary
It’s not the long commute, annoying coworkers or overall job satisfaction that causes most people to say goodbye to their old jobs. No, in fact, you may not be surprised to hear that most people move jobs in order to have a better salary.
With political uncertainty looming in recent years, people are on the hunt for financial stability to weather out the storm; which means seeking more money. Lots of people say they ‘need a new challenge’, a ‘shorter commute’ or even claim it’s a ‘culture clash’. Be honest! There’s no shame in leaving a job for more money or even a better benefits package if that’s what you need.
So, don’t be afraid to make this change in 2018 and own it as something you need to do in your life.
In summary, a career change is something that you need to do for yourself. No matter what shape or form this may take. So, stop getting up and dreading the day ahead of you every day
Make a positive change today and actually enjoy your job through 2018.
