On January 31st good news came along for all young leaders. Model European Union Zagreb 2017 opened Chairs applications! It's fully funded, gives you an opportunity to meet new friends and have a lot of fun. However, you are probably still doubting whether you should apply or not.
Yes, we know how getting out of your comfort zone can be challenging, so we prepared something to help you out with your decision and to boost your confidence.
We came up with five characteristics that make perfect Chair material with the little help of our last year's Chairs Coordinator, Dimitar Chatleski. Check the box if sign corresponds with your skills and then do the simple math – if most boxes are checked, it’s time to apply for an MEUZ Chair experience here!
1. YOU ARE FULL OF ENERGY ▢
Visualizing your goals and going after them with a smile on your face. No matter if it rains or the sun is shining, your energy level is always up when it comes to work because you actually enjoy it. This is very important when it comes to guiding the institution. “If you are bored and yawning and do not feel like guiding the whole discussion, that will be noted by the delegates and the respect towards you will go down”, says Dimitar. On the other hand, your energy will affect other delegates and light up discussion. Good results guaranteed!
2. YOU ARE POSITIVE AND OPEN ▢
You are genuinely interested in what others have to offer and how they are doing. You are thrilled with your work and others pick up your enthusiasm. If you make each day fun, you will probably make discussion and simulation better for everyone. Go, happy Chairman! Many times, delegates, especially those who are newcomers, will be partially afraid or at least will keep the distance from the Chairing Board. Break that. Let them know that you are nothing different than all other delegates, and you have the position just because you are in this MEU world a little longer than they are. Make new friends and make their experience even better!
3. YOU KNOW HOW TO KEEP BALANCE ▢
Strict but fair. Confident in accepting responsibilities, capable of confronting risky situations. Know when it’s time to have fun and when it’s time to work. From his own experience, Dimitar knows how hard, but important this characteristic is. “Trust me when I tell you that you should never have all eggs in one basket. While some delegates will enjoy the fact that you are strict and you keep the discussion fully by the Rules of Procedures, others will feel like you are setting strict boundaries and vice versa. Try to give them room to explore and learn, but make sure you are strict enough so they do follow the rules of the institution.” Life is all about balance, right? So is the conference.
You are the one who needs to be the captain of that boat and makes sure the final goal reach the land it is intended to be reached.
4. YOU KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN ▢
You know when it’s time to crack a joke. After working hours, it’s a pleasure for you to catch up with your colleges and enjoy brilliant Croatian atmosphere without talking about the simulation. “Yes, that is right”, Dimitar follows, “although your position is important, remember that after all this is a simulation, and besides learning about EU work and procedures, people are here to have fun. You will always remember those few days, so make the best of them.”
5. YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO ▢
The most telling sign of all. If the politics has always been your passion; you get excited when you hear the word MEU simulation, leading is your strong suit, you are eager to learn, engage and enjoy everything within your fields of interests? You are, my friend, our next Chairman. ;)
Applications for Chairs are open until 13th of February!
