Technology have been the driver of economic and social development worldwide, but to all countries had the capacity to develop and maintain the technologies they require. The introduction of science and technology to the world has been of great benefit to man. In industries, the field of engineering, health and environment, the use of knowledge from science has enhanced the ability of individuals to solve problems in relation to the society. Putting more emphasis on how technological advancement has affected the physical environment, a great impact has been made.
Environmental science is our interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical, biological and other forms of science including; ecology, atmosphere science, zoology, mineralogy and the like tot eh study of the environment and solution to the environmental problems. Environmental scientist work on subjects like understanding of earth processes, pollution control and mitigation and effects of global climate change.
Climate change means a change in climate that persists over a sustained period of time. From research, the World Meteorological Organization defines this time period as 3 years. Examples of climate change, includes; global warming, changes in rainfall patterns and change in solar radiations.
The research paper focuses on how technology has enhanced climate change.
Most of Climate change conditions result from human
activities such as burning of fossil fuels and changes for global pattern for
land. These activities result in the increase in atmospheric concentration of
some gases especially carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. As these gases
concentrate in the atmosphere accumulate in the atmosphere, they act as the
roof of greenhouse, trapping long-wave radiations and causing rise in
temperature as well as providing other forms of climate disruption. For this
reason, such gases are also known as “
Greenhouse Gasses” [GHGS].
Human society has long been subject to disruption by climate change. Agriculture, Public health, water resources and coastal zones and infrastructure are areas which have been massively affected by climate change. In many cases, people will adopt to climatic change by simply changing their location, occupation or interestingly employ different forms of technology such as irrigation systems or drought resistant seeds, crop rotation patterns and insurance schemes. Early warning systems that combine measuring devices in addition to knowledge are already available and widely used.
Minor climatic varieties can have a major impact on agricultural output ever in a single growing season; however, some plants can cope with extreme climatic conditions on their own. Some have natural adoptive capacity which enables them to avoid damaging effects of atmospheric conditions, such as temperatures, drought etc. However, relatively little is known about the potential for plants resistance to high temperature, stress, and studies have been few and inclusive. The adaptation of most crop production is likely to rely on human intervention. The introduction of new forms of irrigation has helped farming communities to have considerable experience of coping with adverse climatic events such as droughts, floods and high salinity.
Many aspects of human are affected by weather and climate. High temperatures may cause health strike, environmental changes can also accelerate the transmission of infectious diseases, and water shortages undermine systems of hygiene or reduce crop yields, leading to malnutrition.
However, in some areas climate change may lead to the improvement of health conditions. Such is in the case of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, higher temperatures might cause a small increase in mostly tropical counties but reduce the number of death in temperate regions.
Technology has led to the innovation of special machines to treat disease of all types,, other knowledge applied in the treatment and prevention of some diseases includes vaccination, use or radioactive waves, use of drugs and medicine among others. Water resume management in another area of study in environmental science which has highly been enhanced by technology. Humans, animals and plants rely on sufficient and dependable supplies of water. But there is a great pressure on this vital resource. Rapid industrial development, extensive irrigated agriculture and large urban population are in many places using water faster than it can be replaced. Climate change has a great effect on water resource on both the supply and demand rate.
For the supply rate, changes in precipitation patterns may cause a lot of rainfall which will increase food production. But this can also increase the probability of natural disasters like flooding. For the demand side, global warming will increase people’s need for water and speed up evaporation from the surfaces of plants and water sources such as ponds and lakes.
Once again technology has enhanced water conservation by introducing reservoirs and water holding tanks. Treatment of water has also been introduced to make clean available to live hood. Instruments for checking weather conditions and predicting heavy rainfalls has also improved.
Flooding warnings, typical weather stations have six  major instruments for measuring climate conditions. The thermometer is used for measuring air and surface temperature. Barometer for measuring atmospheric pressure, hygrometer for measuring humidity, anemometer for measuring speed of wind and pyrometer for measuring solar radiations. All these instruments are as a result of technological advancement. The earth observation system is another innovation that can provide more accurate weather forecast.

A prominent example being the very unclear stand of the United States on the Climate Change agenda. That notwithstanding various countries have committed to the climate change agenda and in different ways supporting the adaptation and mitigation strategies. One way of addressing climate change as mentioned is through innovative technological solutions. The true threat of climate change is the effect this has on Sustainable Development the adverse effects are felt by the poor and future generations. Technology adaptation is in the form of both soft and hard technology for climate change. Soft technology is where people take insurance for various aspects of climate change and they caution themselves from the likelihood of paying for the adverse effects of climate change and thus transfer this risk to a third party. Hard technology is where technical solutions are developed to respond to the risks of climate change. Soft and hard technology is used differently depending on what organizations or individuals aim at achieving. The technological innovations have run across different sectors and have solutions that are different at each level. The application has been designed to show the density of vegetation and availability of water in the different areas. The application, Afriscout, got me thinking about the role technology plays in responding to climate change. One remembers that one of the most common and earliest innovations in climate change was solar products that came to provide clean energy. What both of the technologies mentioned above bring to my mind is who the target market for the technologies are. The first step to be able to use the technology is to have the necessary software to use the technology. Numerous of the technologies developed that respond to climate change target the poor in society and thus one of the considerations should be the accessibility of this technologies and how useful they are to the target market. Kenya Climate Innovation Centre has been supporting businesses in clean tech and one of the main agenda KCIC has had, has been looking at the viability of the technologies especially to the target markets. Technologies should be able to build a business case and at the same time have a target market they respond to. As part and ongoing greenhouse effect has emissions take their inevitable toll on the climate, adaptations, which refers to finding and implementing sound ways of adjusting to the adverse effects of climate change, is becoming an urgent priority along with mitigation of climate change.
While mitigation actions are already being implemented, work on adoption focused so far on establishing important adaptation principles. This work has been tragedy-completed and the path has been cleared for real adaptation – related action on the ground.
In summary, technology has introduced new forms of irrigation, introduced instruments for predicting weather conditions as well as the earth observation systems for accurate weather forecast, adaptation and mitigation processes among others to enhance global change.
