Answer: Contemporary dance is a style of dance that combines elements of several dance steps including jazz, lyrical, modern dance and classical ballet. In this dance step, dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.
This genre of dance developed during the mid-twentieth century and gradually gained giant strides for formally trained dancers’ throughout the world. It has strong influence especially in the U.S and Europe.

The freedom of movement that it allows, affords dancers with less training or technique to still enjoy dance without the need for perfect turnout or nice feet. That isn’t to say that contemporary dance is in any way inferior to ballet. Contemporary dance can be challenging both physically and emotionally and it pushes the boundaries of dance and forces audiences to think and take chances.
Who inspired Contemporary dance?
Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham are the brain behind contemporary dance. They pioneer dancers strongly believed that, dancers should have freedom of movement, allowing their bodies to freely express their innermost feelings.
Unlike other dance technics, contemporary dance focuses on emotions and floor works using gravity to pull them down to the floor. It is mostly done in bare feet and can be performed in too many types of music.
Following the influence of pop culture, one important and unique aspect of contemporary dance is that it rejects the importance of the legs unlike some stressful traditional dance styles. Instead of sharp and pointed movements, contemporary dance rather focuses on movement of the trunk, which permits more fluid and relaxed movement.
What to wear in contemporary dance?
During this dance rehearsal, outfits vary depending on the discretion of the studio owner. Customarily, students will wear a “leotard with spandex shorts” and a “tank top or t-shirt over the leotard”. Students often dance barefoot, but may also opt for “jazz shoes”, “ballet shoes” or “foot paws” if they choose to.
What diet is appropriate for performance?
Before dance concert time, dancers are expected to go in for real food like, starchy foods, fruits, vegetables, oats, rice, minimally processed grains like quinoa, wheat or barley, Green tea. It should be taken one to two hours before dance performance.Dancers are performing athletes and should follow a healthy diet. Dancers about to perform need food that won’t sit like a rock on the stomach during the show. They need to go in for easily digestible substances.
Harvard School of Public Health recommends other protein sources such as beans, peas, seeds, legumes, fish or poultry for those who prefer to eat chicken. These diets prove to be less inflammatory.
