Estonia has become the first country in the world that offers e-citizenship to all interested foreign citizens. The purpose of it is to provide free access to many online services that this country offers, including online health care, banking and education. The whole approval process last for less than ten days and anyone interested in it could personally apply so that can get identification card.
The experts predict that Estonia will, by the end of 2025, have at least ten millions registered e-citizens. Just to make a comparison, total population of Estonia is estimated to be 1.3 million in 2015.
Very frequently, we hear that digital identity is the most significant political and law concept of today. It's been developing rapidly because the idea itself is very appealing to people. The way Switzerland has become a synonym for banking, Estonia is hoping to become synonym for e-trade and e-documentation. That would be its chance to move from ex-Soviet tag and portrait itself as a country of innovation and investments. Which is not false, actually. Once you have Estonian ID, setting up a company there would only take a couple of minutes that can increase investments drastically.
This step can ensure completely new form of welfare, provide new business opportunities and be a huge step towards creating digital identity. Besides simplifying life to all citizens, e-citizenship has another, even more important purpose: identity has become divorced from location. There is no reason why multiple satellite citizenship will not become a norm. Can it change the concept of nation as we've known, we'll have to wait to see.
