If all the MUNs around the globe had the opportunity to materialize their rather majestic plans, we would be in a constant financial tornado. Instead, our student wallets remind us that we cannot fund all the great crisis we have in mind and sometimes we have to settle with internet access for the last twenty minutes of the session. Food may be a luxury for the ones who can order delivery at the conference’s venue and sometimes* as going through your mun memorabilia* you may wonder what to do with that let’s say peculiar thing included in the conference’s welcome packet.
And although the discussion of MUN funds is endless, it becomes personal and a matter to write about when amusing e-mails reach you asking you in a rather passionate way to show them the gateway to all the funded opportunities/flow of money you know since you are *Alex from MUNPlanet* e-mailing list. Well, to set things clear, I am not that person, but this is a recap of the ways I know on funding:
0)Information Packet: Before going anywhere, make sure that you have laid down all of your plans and you are aware of their price. Include letters from the Secretariat/organizing team explaining the significance of your project, do not exceed 5-8 pages overall, adjust it according to potential supporter’s need and remember to always answer “how is this going to help the sponsor?’’
1)University Funding: Even if discouraged by the societies officer do not hesitate to ask the respective department directly. Even if they refuse money, you may get rooms free of charge, guest wi-fi passports and a list of alumni. Look for former MUNers, they are the ones who will understand your needs and redirect you in no time.
2)Community Funding: Similarly to university, you may get support in material or valuable opportunities to network and expand.
3)Libraries: Most of them include special sections on funding methods, so never say never to the secrets that a librarian has to offer you!
4)Online contests: Scan the web-find anything related to IR that offers money and work around it!
5)Clever affiliations: An often complain about the importance of affiliations (either institutional or among conferences) is that after a while are not functional or limited to e-mail lists. Well, if an Institution invite them to be guest speakers/academic advisors/special guest on a crisis that concerns their country-topic of expertise. And if conference is concerned, evaluate affiliations on an annual basis and keep on looking out for new opportunities.
6)Creative academics: An effectively accurate simulation with a dash of imagination is the best way to go.
7)MUNPlanet: For a lot of the above mentioned points (eg online contests and networking), MUNPlanet offers a quite interesting hub to explore. For instance, interaction with other conferences of the same size or regional interest may become beneficial for any of the parties involved. Also, a MUNPlanet membership gives you access to a list of funds that you would otherwise require many valuable hours of your life to find out!
So, to recap money is waiting for your clicks- you have to know what to look for!
