“The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or it can be the slowest form of poison” – Ann Wigmore
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has calculated that the toxic habit of chugging junk food is so high that a whopping 61% of the food that Americans get while grocery shopping is highly processed. If you have a FitBit, or some app that tracks your calorie intake you will see that the 1,000 calories you're shocked to look at when you look at your data at the end of the day, is solely from processed foods.Henceforth, a study (possibly the first of its kind) was carried out by researchers that analyzed an immense pool of data of the food items we buy while grocery shopping. The statistics derived were from 157,000 shoppers, who tracked their edible purchases with a barcode scanner from 2000-2012, for anywhere from 10 months to 14 years. What was recognized after the result of this research that of the 1.2 million products that were bought, almost all of them had high degrees of procession and additives that were multi-ingredient industrial mixtures. This is harrowing because after so much chemical usage in our daily edibles, the product loses a hefty amount of the nutrition that the original animal source or plant fundamentally carried.
Thankfully, there is a surging demographic of people now that are fighting towards healthy eating and towards the safe-keeping of the environment. The grocery store that is pioneering this movement since 1986 is Healthy Living Market and Café. They’re a regional family-owned supermarket leader that specializes in providing local, organic and natural foods. Healthy Living Market and Café has a deep devotion towards its farmers and producers.
They are also major environmentalists and a couple of their environment-oriented goals are:
1.Zero waste butchery in both stores, using whole local animals.
2. An active Community Outreach Program that is a partner in many environmental projects every year and donates to hundreds of non-profits.
3. Compost/recycling project with Casella Waste Systems.
4. An abundantly stocked Bulk Department that reduces all packaging by offering over 100 self-serve products.
5. Organically grown edible landscaping and gardens at our Vermont and New York stores.
Their commitment to providing their customers and locality with the cleanest of products is astounding and showcases the golden-heartedness of the owners, vendors, farmers that are all engaged in giving the best of the best, just to ensure you make the right decisions about your eating habits.
Healthy Living Market and Café is taking their already strict standards for the products they market to another level. Effective from January 2019 – every food item that they sell will be free from artificial colors, artificial preservatives, bleached or bromated flour, added hormones, artificial fat and trans-fat, antibiotics etc.
Eli Lesser-Goldsmith, CEO and Co-Owner says: “For over 30 years, we’ve been on a mission to offer our communities the best regional and national brands – with an unparalleled focus on local farms and local producers. We believe what we sell should be good for you and your family, good for the community, good for our supply partners, and good for the environment. These new standards will undoubtedly make Healthy Living Market and Café the healthiest grocery store in the markets we operate in, and healthy options are what people are looking for more and more.”
We urge you to begin revamping your daily eating habits because the food that you consume will manifest itself in your physique once you grow older and older. In a day and age where it’s literally survival of the fittest, don’t strive to be a couch potato!
