What are e-cigarettes?
E-cigarettes are basically what the name suggests – cigarettes which are built and used with electronic parts rather than purely being filled with the incredibly harmful tobacco that everyday cigarettes use.
Made using a battery, a vaporizer and a mouthpiece, a heated e-liquid contained within the product created a flavored vapor that is then breathed in by the smoker in the same way that they would use a normal cigarette. The process of smoking is therefore very much the same, and it makes it easy and quick for a regular smoker to adapt to using them. Are they really safer than traditional cigarettes?
So now you know what they are, you are probably wondering whether it’s worth using them or at least considering using them in the future. Well, currently they have mixed reviews and differing opinions on their safety. Supporters of e-cigarettes claim that they are a much healthier option than their everyday counterparts as they contain far fewer of the harmful chemicals found in traditional tobacco.
However, they certainly aren’t completely ‘safe’; they still contain nicotine (albeit smaller amounts than traditional cigarettes), which in itself is a highly addictive drug. It’s also been shown in the past that it is bad for the health of people’s bones, and medical professionals are also concerned about other parts of the product and the potential health implications that may have.
In fact, retailers have found it increasingly difficult to come across public liability insurance for electronic cigarettes because of the uncertainty around them. With insurance companies concerned that that future testing may show them to be more dangerous than once thought, they are currently reluctant to endorse them and offer much protection to stockists. This may provide an indication to consumers that they perhaps aren’t fully ready for the mass market.
The main benefits of e-cigarettes
Despite the concerns, there are certain benefits to using e-cigarettes which smokers may consider if they are thinking about converting from the traditional method or perhaps attempting to quit altogether. They are undoubtedly a far cheaper option first and foremost, mainly because only one needs to be purchased and then re-charged or batteries replaced on regular intervals.
The smell is also far more pleasant and socially acceptable than with tobacco-based cigarettes. Smoke is not only harmful to the health of the smoker and those around them, but it can also result in damage to clothes and even parts of the home that are regularly exposed, including discoloration of walls and other surfaces.
Health professionals are also concerned that, because they are more widely accepted in public, it may cause the smoker to intake nicotine more often than they otherwise would do if they had to wait to use a traditional cigarette.
