Check your privilege!
“White privilege is a set of advantages and/or immunities that white people benefit from on a daily basis beyond those common to all others.”
White privilege is a controversial and a very real issue. Some people seem to just laugh it off, but I doubt that they ever imagined themselves in some of the underprivileged people's shoes. Another reason they don't take it seriously is that they don't really take into account all that white privilege represents. As it can be confusing, this text will present it to you as simply as possible so that the society can finally be equal. Here are four things you need to know about white privilege.
There are certain perks that come with white skin color. When you hurt yourself, you can trust that most band-aids are the color of your skin. Soaps that you get in hotels are by default suited for white skin. Most shampoos are made for texture of the hair white people have. Nude lipstick, or anything in nude color, really, only appears so on white skin.
2. Substantial advantages
Negative presumptions based on stereotypes won’t be made about white people. A white person wearing a long t-shirt with sagging pants won’t automatically be seen as a thug, or a drug dealer. They won’t be categorized as lazy, or financially irresponsible. Their success will be attributed to them, whereas, when it comes to people of color, quotas are seen as the main reason behind it. Most importantly, white people are regarded as innocent until proven guilty, while the people of color are being harassed or searched (or even worse) by law enforcement just because their skin color makes them look ‘suspicious’.
3. Wide representation
White people are everywhere. They are widely represented in the media, as well as in other areas of life. Take the school curriculum for example, it was only in the last century that people of color started being represented in history books. Movies or TV shows always have a huge number of white actors, while other people of color are just barely represented. For example, just this year, Academy Award nominees were only white people! Furthermore, most frequently, magazine covers, runways, or advertisements feature white models.
4. It’s not your fault
This all doesn’t mean that you’re somehow at fault or a bad person just for being white. However, it is crucial that you acknowledge these privileges you got out of simple respect and sympathy for someone who is disadvantaged by old societal norms.
