- Charles Kupchan, Former Director for European Affairs on the National Security Council
So far it has been reported that about 293,000 people entered Europe during massive migration of people from Africa and Asia, from which 132,405 requested asylum in one of EU countries. As some could expected Europe was not ready for this scenario, hence only 23,295 people actually were granted permission to stay within European borders, while other 109,101 are waiting for deportation back. About two thirds of immigrants were accepted in Germany, Italy, Sweden and France. However, European nations are missing a lot of unity in order to solve the situation. Graphics below shows breakdown of nationalities of the immigrants.
We are witnessing that a continent of 742.5 million people is failing to help refugees. This is another proof of broken social system of European Union. Instead, politicians are enforcing border projects that will stop further migration of people. Wall has been built in Hungary and Greece, anti-migration protest are organized across the continent, Macedonian police stopped thousands of immigrants to enter that country. Another controversial occurrence is Bossi-Fini law in Italy which forbids immigrant to enter the country without already signed work permission. Xenophobia was never too foreign to Europeans, but these last events prove that conversation of traditional policies and ethnically clean countries is of the highest priority.
