So 2 weeks went by fast, and it was time for me to attend my first MUN Conference. I wore my semi-formal black skirt and not-at-all-formal white shirt, but you can't blame me because I only had two weeks to prepare! Anyway, god knows I didn't know what to expect, but I heard there was going to be some public speaking involved which was like my death penalty, so I was feeling pretty shaky. The conference started and it was my turn to deliver my opening speech. Everything was going well, my English was impeccable, my speech was pretty decent and I was starting to feel more and more comfortable, UNTIL it was time to yield the floor. I closed my speech with the most informal thing I could have said- ''Thanks!'', a slip of the tongue. NOOOoooo!!! I know you're thinking ''Hey, that's not that bad, chill!'', but try to imagine my horror! Everyone will know I'm an intruder! Hahaha, needless to say no one really heard (or cared), so I stopped stressing about it. The rest of the BaLMUN went smoothly and it was very enjoyable. I managed to make a few great friends from other countries, that I'm still in contact with. It was fun, eventful and interesting and somewhere along the way I gained the confidence I was so clearly lacking and I caught myself being eager to take the floor. There is really no environment more stimulating than MUNs.
The point is, my favourite MUN conference is my first one, because it helped me step out of my comfort zone and try out new things. That was only 3 years ago, and look at me now, all grown up, attending The Global Indian Model United Nations in New Delhi, except this time I won't be hiding behind the girl with the big hair, trying to avoid making eye contact with the chair. I'm thinking of messaging my English teacher and thanking her for introducing me to the wonderful world of MUNs.
If you want to join me on this new adventure, please apply (*whispering* I heard it's going to be THE BIGGEST MUN EVER *that was me loud-whispering*).
