7. What does the agenda look like?
At INMUN this year, we are working under the overall theme of‘Reinventing the Global Dream’, taking cue from the developments across the world over the past one year. The underlying idea is to remind the students of the importance of an internationalist, tolerant and liberal outlook that seeks to maximize opportunities for everyone and attempts to address those that are left behind in the scheme of upward mobility. This is reflected in the choice of committees being simulated as well as in individual agendas. For example, we have theEconomic and Social Councilattempting to draft a convention on labor rights with a forward looking outlook that addresses the concerns raised by the4thIndustrial Revolution. This is in contrast with the present approaches to the subject which still operate under the assumptions of labor organization drawn from the Victorian Era. We are also simulating, for the first time in India, theC40 Cities Climate Leadership Forumin which students, representing individual cities, will discussclimate change mitigation from an urban perspective. Their discussion will revolve around the machinations of efficient urban planning as well as highly sophisticated concepts such asInternet of Thingsandregulation of big data. We are also focusing on Europe with a simulation of theEuropean Union Outreach Summit, where EU members will deliberate on matters of trade and security with their key partners from around the world, with an aim to modernize the EU for facing the challenges of the 21stCentury.
In addition, we are also looking towards the past for inspiration, we will be simulating aHistoric Indian National Congress (1929, Lahore Session), with the aim of reminding students of the high ideals of the Indian freedom struggle which boasts of being the manifestation of the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi among a host of other luminaries. The session in particular, is credited by many to be the foundation stone for the establishment of the world’s largest democracy for it was here that a republic day was decided, and a constitution for an independent India discussed for the first time and complete independence was laid down as a goal by the country’s largest political party. It was in many ways,India’s Declaration of Independence.
And lastly, for the classical debaters, we have the three juggernauts-General Assembly 1, Security Counciland aNational Security Council (India). While GA1 will discusscyber security and weapons deployment in conflict zones, Security Council will discusstheturmoil in Syria and Israel-Palestineand the National Security Council (of India) will be acrisis committee. Together, these three are intended to attract those MUNners who are in the activity for the thrill of debating with spontaneity.
