In the recent interview of Professor Stephen Walt, one of the questions tackled there was the Professor's stance about the world by 2034.
Professor Walt stated 4 challenges that has an effect to us in 20 years time, namely:
Climate Change. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that all of the human activities we are doing now will haunt us all sooner or later. One obvious effect of our actions is climate change.
According to oxford dictionary, climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onward and attributed largely to the increased in levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.
While according to EPA FAQ, “climate change” means major changes in temperature, rainfall, snow, or wind patterns lasting for decades or longer. But why should we be bothered with climate change you asked? Maybe watching this video will enlighten you.
Crisis in Arab/Islamic world. The latest outcome of the crisis in the Islamic world was the attack in Kenya which resulted 147 casualties as Islamic gunmen targeted Christian students. Prior to the gun attack on French Magazine that killed 12. These were just sample incidents that made global headlines.
But what about the everyday killing that didn't reach the media? What about the unreported casualties? I think these are enough for us to be alarmed about this insurgency. Who wants a 2034 full of conflicts and terrorism, right?
Division of EU. Numerous forces are dividing the supranational organization, European Union. For example, the most heated debate that has been ongoing for decades is the accession of Turkey into the European Union. The UK argues that Turkey is essential because they see Turkey as being able to help with the European Debt Crisis (as the EU needs all the help it can get), but France and Germany don't want Turkey in the EU because they do not see it as a full-European country in the first place, Turkey is a Muslim nation, and Turkey will eventually pass Germany in population and form the majority of the political body of the European Union.
The presentation below provides the rest of the forces that is dividing EU. With Europe accounting for 25% of global trade, its recovery is important to the health of the global economy. Thus, if the EU will fall apart, expect this fiasco will spread like wildfire that will affect everyone.
Sino-American rivalry. It is now evident that China is becoming more and more powerful in economic, technological and military aspects but second only to the United States. If these two nations will clash, it poses a grave threat to the whole world.
These are 4 scenarios that probably has a say in 20 years time. Whether or not these will fully happen, we have to hope for the best.
What about you? Can you think of other issues that will affect us by 2034?
