The index consists of a total of 22 qualitative and quantitative indicators, and covers 162 countries in the world. Peace is measured according to three broad criteria: "the level of safety and security in society; the extent of domestic or international conflict; and the degree of militarisation".
Together with Freedoms in the World and Failed States Index, this IEP project is one of the most influential in the world of the kind.
Among the most important findings in the eighth edition of GPI are that armed conflict and terrorist activities "contributed to the world becoming slightly less peaceful, continuing the global slide in peacefulness which has now been in effect for the last seven years".
Among the contenders, Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world, with Denmark, Austria, New Zealand and Switzerland making it into top-5. On the other hand the United States due to its militarization got 101st place, while Russia was placed in the ten least peaceful countries (152nd).
Syria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq and Somalia are the least peaceful countries. The conflict in Ukraine ranked that country 141st.
The report also claims that the cost of violence in the world in 2013 reached 9.8 trillion $.
