In the era where we have had two major accidents with nuclear power production, the importance of strengthening the industrial safety standards couldn't be stressed enough.
In a video message to the Conference of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission for Europe Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents, which opened yesterday in Geneva, Mr. Ban warned that the consequences of such accidents can be “severe and are often deadly.” The increasing probability of extreme weather events caused by climate change may pose new risks to industrial safety, he noted.
The role of the UNECE Convention is to help with prevention of industrial accidents, but also provide assistance if such accidents occur. It gives a special attention to the international cooperation in problem solving.
