A lot of young people are looking for internships in order to facilitate their careers and put their knowledge into practice. But there are plenty of other reasons why students all over the world apply for internships. For instance, it is a great way to travel to another country and meet more people. And there are plenty of programs that the students can find in their field of expertise.
However, some people oppose internships because most of them are not paid. These students simply refuse to apply for internships, which is completely fine as well. But I believe that they are missing out on numerous things.
What is great about internships is that they are beneficial for everyone involved. First of all, the students get necessary experience and they develop various skills, depending on what they are doing. These include presentation and communication skills, teaching skills, management skills, etc. The companies, communities, schools and the institutions involved get people who will run their projects, bring fresh ideas to the table and execute everything. But how those people who apply for internships have the edge over the students who do not have this type of extracurricular activities in their resumes?
First of all, students who have taken part in one internship have seen what it is like in the “real world”. They experience what it is like to be a part of a team working real jobs and because of that, people gain more confidence. Tomorrow, when they apply for a job, they can say in an interview that they have been working and tell them what their experience was like.
Secondly, the students who become interns learn more about themselves during such experiences. Perhaps you have believed that you wanted to do something your entire life and you get to do that as an intern. Suddenly, you find some aspects of that job irritating and this job is not actually what you expected it would be.
Thirdly, you start creating your own network of people. Usually, people who apply for the same internships as you do have the similar interests. You will find it easy to connect with the people no matter they are coming from your country or from the neighboring states.
Last but not least, the transition to a job will be smooth. Those who graduate and who have not participated in an internship may have issues when they land their first job. It is not an easy transition, but for those with one, or several internships behind them will find this transition natural.
One of the biggest issues of today’s job market is that employers are looking for people with experience. Internships are a great way to gain this experience and not put your studies aside. In a nutshell, with an internship, you will be able to find a job more easily. You will have more confidence and skills that are more developed, which will give you an edge over the other candidates.
