This is not a political post. Happy reading!
A year ago, I was researching why the Arab spring failed in some countries, when I stumbled on an interview. This man, who I later learned the name: Srdja Popovic, was explaining how the activists didn’t set their end goal properly. Throwing over dictators were the objectives, when it should have been achieving democracy. Fast forward, last November, the yellow vest movement was born in France. Non-violent activists all over the country were reading one book “how to topple a dictator” written by Srdja Popovic.
After hearing much about his man in a short lap of time, I decided to dive deep into research. First, I had to understand what non-violent activism is. Then to fill the 20 years gap in Balkan history I had. After that I bought the famous book “Blueprint for revolution”. I read it in 3 days. I recommend it, even to those who aren’t interested in activism or politics. That book has a second layer. And here I am today to share with you the 11 lessons I learned that have nothing to do with planning a revolution.
#11 – This can’t / won’t happen to me
Living in the age of social media, we are inclined to constantly compare our lives others. We tell ourselves: “I will never be happy as X. I Will never be wealthy as Y. I will never love like Z.” We are aware it is not healthy, but we do it anyway. Here is a tip, instead of pitying yourself, act. “This” can happen to you, as long as you are preparing for it.
#10 – See big, but start small
We all have big plans. Nevertheless, the ladder of success is climbed step by step.
#9 – Have a vision for tomorrow
A life calling. We all need a life calling. Take time to figure out yours. It is what comes naturally to you. Once determined, make sure that every taken action will get you one step closer to achieving it.
#8 – You are as strong as your weakest point
When planning, step one should be improving the areas and aspects you are not good at. Your chances of succeeding increase every time you level up.
#7 – Don’t take life too seriously … smile!
We all have these moments in life. When we are depressed and sad. When we are fearing and dreading tomorrow. Thing is, take life less seriously, take it with a smile. Problems will not disappear, but at least you will be in the right mindset to tackle them head on.
#6 – Life can’t be controlled
Don’t get frustrated when things don’t go as planned. Learn to play the hand with the cards you have been dealt.
#5 – It’s all about team spirit
Rarely in life, we get to make decision that doesn’t influence others. Don’t take decisions despite your family and loved ones, include them instead.
#4 – The devil is in the details
Imagining our future in detail makes it somehow more accessible. Take time to endlessly describe your someday.
#3 – Fight your demons
It is easy to be angry at others, at the world. However, being angry blinds us. Transcending our demons is a daily effort, but with it comes clarity, peace of mind and soul.
#2 – Finish what you’ve started
Don’t give up along the way. Don’t settle before crossing the finish line.
#1 – It has to be you
No soul on earth – parents excluded – will work hard to make your tomorrow better. You must put the time and effort to transform your dreams, desires and aspirations into your reality.
