This year’s Montreal United Nations Conference (MUNC) is a special conference with lots to offer participants unlike any year before it. We are marking the fifth anniversary since the inaugural conference edition of 2013. Montreal is additionally celebrating its 375th anniversary and Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary. It is a wonderful time to be in Montreal and experience all that makes our people so proud to live here.
Earlier in the year, we organized Harvard World Model United Nations 2017 (WorldMUN) in Montreal at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. With over 2500 delegates in attendance, it was the largest conference we had organized. Our experience organizing MUNC had prepared us for WorldMUN, knowing how to put the focus on participants and maximizing the delegate experience. The resounding success of WorldMUN in Montreal led to a boost in registration numbers from international delegates for MUNC 2017. Many participants from this year’s WorldMUN are eager to return to Montreal and we are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces this upcoming weekend!
The organizational planning for MUNC 2017 began immediately following the conclusion of MUNC 2016. More than 500 participants had been brought to Montreal for an exciting weekend full of debate and diplomacy. The conference received its highest approval rating from participants with over 99% reviewing the conference positively. After the closing ceremony of MUNC 2016, the conference staff held its traditional debrief session to go over feedback and suggest ways to continue to innovate the experience for participants and excite them with creative new ideas. One of those recommendations involved MUNC incorporating the Diplomacy Award model that has become popular at conferences such as WorldMUN.
Below are some projects we setup over the course of the year:
We launched a new initiative on the Canadian Model UN circuit called Canadian Model United Nations (CMUN). Our goal is to connect delegates, delegations and conferences across the country by creating a community for them. Since its debut in October, the response has been very positive and with numerous conferences including MUNC already part of the circuit, the project is off to a great start!
The Montreal United Nations Conference Alumni Association is another project we launched earlier in the year with the aim of connecting our alumni. We want to them involved and engaged with the conference they hold dear by organizing special events and networking opportunities for them to stay in touch and help build the generation of tomorrow that share the same values as us and continue to transform the Canadian Model UN circuit.
Action Réfugiés Montréal (ARM), a social services organization that acts as a strong voice for refugees in Montreal and beyond, is this year’s conference fundraising partner. The donations collected will go towards helping asylum-seekers and refugees. ARM was previously the conference partner at Harvard World Model United Nations 2017.
MUNC once again continues it strong tradition of promoting conferences and delegations. This year marked the first time that MUNC partnered with numerous international conferences. In fact, MUNC is the only conference in North America to have these many international partners.
MUNC 2017’s partners include:
Concordia Model United Nations (ConMUN);
Hong Kong Model United Nations Club (HKMUNC);
House of Youth Dialogue (HYD);
Model United Nations Champlain (MUNCH);
