When they asked me to write a blogpost about any problem that MUNers (every person that participates in a Model United Nations) will deal with while being part of a Model I might have thought about lots of them, however they were my problems. That is when I started to ask my friends who are also part of the MUN family and lots of ideas came to my mind. It is true, being a delegate in a United Nations Model is not easy, neither is organizing one. While discussing with some friends I figured it out three basic problems that are related one with another.
The first problem is the information. Which page should I believe the most? I am sure that is one question a lot of MUNers have had. While searching for information, the Internet is the first source for most of us, it is true Internet is the best source anyone can have. We can find everything in this platform, and however is everything in it true?I´m sure not everything we can find is true, or actual. While looking for information we have to find look for real, actual and relevant information in the topic we are going to discuss. I might say newspapers are a good option, but what happens when you have to defend a country which language is not known by you and translating any page is not viable, looking onto official pages as the United Nations´. I am sure real information is there, but how important it is to look also for what the society thinks. There is when I think creativity, deduction and thinking comes up, while looking for information it is good to analyze what you are searching. It is not looking only what the government says but also what people think about it. It is not only looking in real pages that you are sure information is real and actual, after that it is important to feel those politics; and think how would you feel as a person in that circumstance?
The second big problem while being part of the Model is how important is your participation and what happens when you feel you are the only or one of the ones that are feeling this topic? I don´t know in other countries, but in Bolivia that might happen several times to everyone who participates repeated opportunities in this kind of events. Why am I the only one talking? Participating a MUnited Nations (MUN) is also being part of the MUN, being part of the country you will represent and most important to feel the topic as your own problem, how are you going to deal with it? Even though sometimes you might feel lost, and unimportant in a discussion I can guarantee all of the MUNers that your opinions are not useless. “Your Opinions Are Used to Transform Humanity”, that is what YOUTH means for me after organizing a MUN, YouthMun. Never feel you might be the small country whose opinions are not important, MUNers are young people whose opinions for now are just opinions but for the future they might be actual changes. Don’t make the other feel they are responsible and you are just watching, while looking for a resolution every opinion is worth it and might change a lot.
This last point brings me to the last problem I figured out. How to get onto a resolution? That is a good question, most of us can feel when are we arriving to the end of a debate, when is everything clear and all the delegates have already told their country´s opinion. How important is it to be part of the solution? For that I want to ask each person who might read this blogpost, why do you like to go to United Nations Models? For me, playing as a country´s representative, any country makes me feel important, but most of all responsible. What happens if any action I take goes to real life, which is why it is the most important part while participating in a MUN, to look for solutions but also to be part of the discussion when the resolution is being written. The goal of every MUNer should be to feel responsible of all the actions, opinions, solutions that debate could bring.
As conclusion, you might think how do those three topics are related, maybe I just gave you a brainstorm of problems but I think all these are related. If you don´t have good, real, actual and important information, being part of the discussion could be real challenging and difficult and it would be worst to find solutions if you don’t know what is going on. The big challenge is to like what you do, to love feeling as a diplomatic, to think more than ever what can happen if your solution is taken, to enjoy looking for information and to learn more about everything but at the same time almost anything. Because that is what a MUNer is, a person who knows what is going on, who feels as part of the world and as part of that problem, who wants to be better for the future, but at the same time that person who knows that that the little problem he or she discussed in a MUN is not everything that is going on around us, that is just a little part of our world and as a consequence starts to look more, to search, to know, to feel, and to think for solutions.
Congratulation to all of you who feel while debating, who think being a MUNer is not a game it is for our future.
Thanks to all my friends who helped me while looking the problems that we live in a United Nations Models, and also for the ones who helped me spread this post.
