And it's never easy. Finding yourself in New York, London, Budapest, or Bern, no matter the size of your environment, we're all single entities in this big big world.
Going into college, doing MAs, learning languages… we're all searching for that certain something to bring us one step closer to being a part of something.
I am too, a small grain in this youngster franchize.
Heading after our goals, it isn't after we've completed some chapters that we can see what they really meant and how they affected us. And you don't know these things in advance. Answering a question of what will be a turning point for you in a way lies in the arms of fate. Sure, you can try to insure your success with hard work, but even when starting something you are mostly unaware of the thing that triggers you in the exact moment. What makes a painter paint a certain way? Yes, all painters can paint, but what triggers each one of them?
For me it wasn't Renoir, it was MUN. But even though I'm far from being a painter, I had to be a bit of an artist and not let this "drop of inspiration" slide down my fingers. Have the sense to feel it and go after it.
MUN came into my life one cold winter when I had nothing to do for my university and didn't have enough money to go skiing. Christmas was approaching and instead of a fireplace I was warming up beside my laptop. Apart from surfing for the new "How I met your mother" episodes, i was looking for a new course/programme/grant I can apply to as a part of my monthly "trying to make it" routine. And I found MUN. They didn't offer a scholarship, no job, not even an internship, I even had to cover my own travel costs and etc, but what I got was much more. In a veni, vidi, vici manner I took off to the conference. I just wish I had this guide for becoming a Model UN delegate to assist me for my first time. Either way, what I saw was more than I expected, and where MUN took me today is more than I dreamed of.
I saw knowledge, people that give you support to push your own boundaries, they don't hand out certificates that say "success guaranteed", but they help you get there. No billboard says this but it's true - MUN can change your life, MUN will change your life if you let it.
Starting MUNs made me a part of something that oriented me towards newfound goals, or maybe old goals that got a new meaning. I started thriving in skills I didn’t know I lacked. In every way this experience got me closer to what I want, and made reaching it easier. It took the totality of the conference, of what it is on paper and that vivid element that people gave it, to open my perspectives and endingly instil the outlook I have today.
I'm still pursuing my goals.I'm not as green as I was three years ago when I attended my first MUN. The way MUN helped me and changed me can't really be put in words, but if you ever worked hard for something and got it, you know the happy feeling.
It's not a painting, it doesn't make lunch, it might not be as visible as the latest iPhone, but I show it off every day – MUN experience. Thank you MUN.Cover Image: Celestine Chua
