Starting Model United Nations can be intimidating. That's completely new world of rules and procedures and it might not be easy to comprehend it all at first. Once you've applied and have been chosen to participate in MUN, comes a few months of preparation period. In order to fully enjoy your first Model UN experience, you should take the best of this time. Here are a couple of tips!
Do your pre-conference research. That doesn't mean that you have to study all the time. Just try to keep up with current developments in the field of your topic or other major UN situations as the conference get closer. Also, you will be getting little tasks from your organizing team, probably from your Chairs during this period. The result of the whole preparation process is a position paper that you should provide around a week before the conference. And don't forget that during the whole preparation process you will have your Chairs who would be your biggest help if you get stuck or if you are late with your assignments.
Prepare your opening speech. Your opening speech will provide your fellow delegates and your chairs the first impression of you and that's why it's very important. You should definitely prepare it before the conference and practice it several times. After good opening speech you will gain confidence for the next speeches and eliminate a lot of anxiety.
Structure your speeches and topics. Before you begin discussion on topics, outline the aspects and key points of your country's politics. Than with a help from other delegates come up with a solution, always thinking about these that would benefit your country the most. The same is when you are giving speeches.
Learn the flow of debate. During the conference, delegates will be discussing many different problems. Sometimes, too many ideas can make delegates lose their interest, but also, it can be overwhelming to you at the beginning. Therefore, you should always try to focus on one aspect of the issue at the time, learn the flow of debate so that you are aware of what to do and when.
Attending your first MUN is certainly a big moment. Be prepared, be relaxed and you will figure it all out faster than you think. You see? Not that hard.
