They believe that Model UN is not about winning awards. Even though awarding the certificates is a big deal, not everything is about getting rewarded. MUNs are about mastering new things, meeting new friends and having fun.
They believe that there is no such thing as a low participation fee. We have already established in one of our previous blogs that MUNs very often do get quite expensive. However, there are ways to approach this and you can find them all here (link to my blog “How to beat the high costs of MUNing”).
They believe in the writings of the Swedish diplomat, economist, author and the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld. Hammarskjöld was called "the greatest statesman of our century" by the American President John F. Kennedy, and even fifty years after his death, he keeps inspiring the new generations of MUNers with his writings.
Believing in second-person plural. This is similar to the “There’s no I in team” belief. The power of people is immeasurable. It is up to certain groups of people, such as MUNers, to provoke the response among the people to do good and make this world a better place.
They all believe in possibility of reaching consensus in most complicated situations. Pleasing every persona in a large pool of people is usually an uphill struggle. Despite these difficulties, there is a belief that putting the differences aside and finding common ground with the diplomats from all over the world is a doable endeavor.
They believe in the Charter of the United Nations, which represents the one guide for not just the society closely involved with the UN, but also for what can be the world state one day.
They believe in strong coffee. Being demanding as it is, MUN requires a lot of energy which cannot be acquired only through food, at least not enough of it. While some might say that coffee and energy drinks are MUNer’s best friends, be careful not to overdose yourself.
They believe in the balance between excellent performance in session and rich social life. Even though there is a huge amount of seriousness and responsibility when it comes to MUN conferences, the socializing aspect of them is largely important as well. Finding the right harmony between the two can be a delicate duty but if you master it, you will gain the most out of the experience.
