In 1962, Present Secretary General of United Nations Ban Ki-moon was a star student of secondary school. Once he won an essay contest sponsored by Red Cross and earned a trip to United States. As part of the trip, Ban met U.S. President John F. Kennedy . When a journalist at the meeting asked Ban what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said, "I want to become a diplomat."
Is it not excited if I say that Present UN secretary General Ban Ki-moon is a former Model UNers !
MUN is a platform where Ban Ki-moon practiced leadership & diplomacy in his early age. Not only Ban Ki-moon but also others World Leaders were Model UNers.
What is MUN?
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN. MUN is a simulation of different UN organs for high school or university students. In it, students assume the role of representatives of different countries.Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other multilateral body, which introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, and decision making. This activity takes place at MUN conferences, which is usually organized by a high school or college/University MUN club.
History of MUN:
The MUN phenomenon started in the United States where simulations were being held even before the birth of the United Nations. Records indicate that as early as the 1920’s simulations of the League of Nations, the predecessor to the United Nations, were taking place. The oldest modern simulation (of the UN) is the Harvard Model United Nations, which was established in 1951. It’s hard to say what the oldest MUN in Europe is, but it is safe to say that The Hague International Model United Nations is one of the oldest. This high school level MUN was established in 1968 and now hosts a conference for almost 4000 students and teachers from all over the world.
In MUN, students can work together to think world crying issues and find the solution to solve the major problems such as war, poverty, climate change, discrimination, terrorism, and more. By participating in MUN students can learn public speaking, debate, negotiation, critical thinking, problem solving, research, writing, teamwork, and leadership — all valuable skills for college, career, and lifelong learning.
And MUN is fun! Students get to travel, make friends, and meet peers from across the globe.
A Model United Nations (MUN) Conference is a simulated session of United Nations in which the participants adopt the role of Delegates to the UN. In simulated UN bodies, for example the Security Council or the General Assembly, the delegate’s debate international issues, reaches compromise solutions and then pass resolutions.
Each participant represents a country which he or she has researched prior to the conference, Delegates do not represent their own opinion, but as realistically as possible argue the allocated country’s official position on the matter of under discussion.
The conferences compromise formal debates, held under procedural rules which are similar to the actual UN rules and UN Charter, and also lobbying and informal discussions which lead to draft resolutions
Through these conferences, participants practice public speaking and learn how to merge different opinions. They further gain an insight into international politics and the work of the United Nations.
MUN conferences are held world-wide in many different languages for various age groups. Each conference is different , but they all share common goals: giving participants an understanding of the UN system, increasing interest in and understanding of other cultures and providing an exciting and valuable experience to all involved.
What is JMUN?
Jakarta Model United Nations (JMUN) is the biggest International Model United Nations (MUN) in Indonesia which first-ever held in the capital city of Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta, by ISAFIS (Indonesian Students Association for International Studies) in 2011. JMUN offers an opportunity to experience the challenges of international negotiation and diplomacy. In JMUN, participants will act as a diplomat from the particular country then discuss international issues like the process that occurs at a UN conference. Throughout the conference, delegates will gain insight into the workings of the United Nations by actively participating in the resolution of important global issues.

The first edition of the Jakarta MUN was held in 2011. Jakarta MUN 2011 successfully attracted more than 300 delegates ranging from local universities to foreign universities. Jakarta MUN 2011 has marked a new era for MUN in Indonesia. Since then, Jakarta MUN is held annually. Five former Jakarta MUN which were held in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 have successfully brought changes for youth in spreading the ideas and values of diplomacy as well as developing knowledge of the issues. This has made Jakarta MUN as an international phenomenon. Jakarta MUN itself has many programs besides the conferences, such as social events and supporting events. Jakarta MUN participants do not only come from big cities in Indonesia, but also from various countries like USA, UK, India, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Ghana and many more. Even this year JMUN 2016 Ambassadors are selected from different countries such as Bangladesh , France etc
All those things made JMUN as right platform to practice diplomacy and leadership activity.
