Welcome to 2017, dear MUNPlanet readers!
Have you thought about your New Year resolutions so as to become a better version of yourself? Did you write them down? If yes, have you set realistic time limits? Also, what are you going to do to accomplish those goals? What kind of daily actions are you going to take so as to achieve what you envisioned?
And this very last question is your key to understanding the concept of motivation, inspiration and habits.
So many of us know what we are supposed to do in order to be happier, wealthier, more loving and more successful. However, so many of us do not do what we know we should do.
Why? Because we come up with various sets of excuses. Yet it is highly unlikely, virtually impossible we will call them like that. In our words those are not excuses, but ‘‘circumstances, other people, unique situation we are facing right now, chaos that is about to get over.’’
Let me just list some of the excuses that prevent us from taking action:
I am not ready enough.
I need more knowledge/ research/ resources to be able to do what I want.
I need to reach out to others for help and it is actually difficult for me to do it.
I am afraid of succeeding.
I am afraid of failure.
I need to be motivated and inspired.
I cannot do it in this country/ city/ region/ because of my family/ because of my friends…
Do not get me wrong, excuses are quite normal part of the human nature. They keep us warm and fuzzy in our comfort zone where everything is familiar.
Evensuper-human Olympic champions may make excuses sometimesabout not going on the court and training just because it is hot, cold, raining, etc. etc.
what makes a huge difference between those who are successful and those who are
not is that the first group of people moves beyond talking and actually takes some action. Successful people start to change what they do not like about their lives. Period!
They start the journey of changing their health conditions, their career and education, their love life, their financial situation, their family relationships, their friendship circle, as well as how they want to contribute to their community.
Those successful people DECIDE to take an action ALTHOUGH they KNOW that things are not going to be perfect, ALTHOUGH they know that they may not succeed, ALTHOUGH they know they may have zero support and look stupid in public, ALTHOUGH it is going to be challenging beyond imaginable.
Still, they know all of those risks are worth it because if they had not done it, they would regret it for the rest of their lives.
Such regret of not taking action is for successful people more painful than sitting on the couch or in the coffee shop and complaining about their lives, circumstancesor other people.
Dear friends, once you felt like a winner in your life, you are highly unlikely to feel like a victim again. You set yourself to a higher standard and you KNOW that you CAN better because you WORK towards that better.
develop new skills and even start a new education path in order to get a better
paid job or a more responsible position in the company you are currently working.
learn how to manage your emotions, to be loving and grateful so that you can
nurture better relationships with your partner, family and friends.
improve your management of time and money so that you do not procrastinate or
spend too much as you used to.
start new exercise regime and eat healthy food although you treat yourself from
time to time.
learn about yourself: how you make decisions, what pisses you off, what makes
you happy, what makes you laugh so that you do not react to situations but
actively create your future.
And most importantly, you learn that NOTHING BIG, NOTHING IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD was not accomplished in a single day, but it was accomplished thanks to a shrewd, intentional action, day by day, little by little and thanks to your flexibility to navigate the course of your action and approach as if you are a pilot.
Because when you are a pilot of your destiny who navigates you plane well you adjust as you travel whether you will arrive from San Francisco to Berlin, Belgrade or Beijing. You do not navigate the plane as you are still in San Francisco. You get to be flexible only when you move.
The vision behind this text happened when our super editor-in-chief Marko Kovacevic asked me to write about motivation and inspiration as MUNPlanet readers will benefit hugely from it and given the fact that so far I had worked with 100 students during 1000 hours of university lectures.
As you can see from this text, motivation and inspiration may encourage you to take action in the first place but they will not help you reach the target. You need to develop habits which will enable you to get going even when it is tough, even when you do not feel like writing, studying, training, developing your business.
Because nobody loves what they do 100% of the time. And habits will help you bridge the times of crisis when you do not feel like making it through the day.
I did not feel like writing this text and actually it was weeks since Marko has mentioned it and I found time to do it. (Last six months of my life have been very busy- working in three cities, developing this huge innovation conference for young leaders in April 2017, spending 10 hours per week on buses and working 70-hour weeks. Thus, many things could come up and did come up between my promise to write the article and actually delivering it to you.)
But the very moment I wrote down in my planner I will do it on January 1st and I sat down today in front of my computer and decided to just write for an hour all excuses vanished into thin air. They evaporated as they have not existed at all.
And now that I have written a 1000-word article that I know will be useful to you, I am proud of myself AND want to do more writing. So next time I need to write an article it would be easier for me because I will remember this feeling of pride and accomplishment and fewer excuses will be around.
Hopefully, this example was useful to you and you will not fall into the trap of giving up from your dreams because life got overwhelming. You will be smart to develop strategies that work and in case something does not function look for the reason and adapt your strategies as you keep moving forward.
Also, bear in mind that personal development industry is a billion dollar market so instead of constantly looking for new solutions that will lift you up, decide to take a long journey of changing yourself step by step without depending on external stimuli such as other people, Millennial events, books and videos. Do not get me wrong, you should have mentors and read inspirational content, but you should not depend on this so as to be happy.
Finally, below I explain how you can get rid of the excuses and turn them into motivation. Although you need habits to make yourself successful, this motivation will be an initial spark from which you need to continue building your habits and momentum:
I am not ready enough. -> Life will never be perfect for you to get ready, but if you start at some point it will become clear what is the next action you should take.
I need more knowledge/ research/ resources to be able to do what I want. -> Truly successful people learn their entire life, but the best knowledge you obtain once you get practical into your business.
I need to reach out to others for help and it is actually difficult for me to do it. -> The best way to overcome feeling shy and inadequate is to practice communication because your muscle for assertiveness will strengthen only if you use it.
I am afraid of succeeding. -> The only thing you should be afraid of is not living to your highest potential and being satisfied with mediocre life.
I am afraid of failure. -> The only thing you should be afraid of is not taking action because of fear as well as not living to your highest potential and being satisfied with mediocre life.
I need to be motivated and inspired. -> That is great, but after 10 or 20 minutes or motivational books, YouTube videos or endless coffee shop conversations, you can shine and implement what motivated you by actually doing some work.
I cannot do it in this country/ city/ region/ because of my family/ because of my friends… -> Just look for examples of successful, ethical and normal people in your country/city/region/family/friendship circle who are doing work and succeeding. The more work you do, the less time for excuses you have.
Good luck to all of you in 2017 and keep building your life day by day. As Peter Drucker, the father of management said, ''What gets measured, gets managed.''
