You know that economic revolution happened as we have moved from transactions between people to building relations and reputations.
To put it differently, in the world we exist today everything can be verified via online and other parameters. The authenticity of the people who are considered to be experts and of the institutions which seem paramount for their importance can be put to test, tracked and discarded if their impact does not prove to be true.
In addition to this, if a person lacks money to perform some transaction, in some cases the favour can be done in exchange or the network as capital can be used. Basically, I can translate several pages to my dentist if I do not have enough money to pay for the fillings. I can ask around via social media or in person who can help me with accommodation in a foreign city.
This is why the good news about your MUN will spread very far. This is why the individual reputations and international social reach of people who organize the MUN add up to the general reputation of the conference. It becomes more and more important who is involved in the project, who endorses it, who participates in it, who reports about it, who reads about it, and who believes in it. Trust will become the new currency and we all have been witnessing this trend on social media and in some niche networks, where the reputation of the users adds up to the authenticity and reliability of the entire network or service. It does not matter if we research about the reputation of hosts on Couchsurfing, of paid accommodation on Airbnb or of vintage booksellers on Amazon. The trail of reputation, i.e. the traces left that signalize an individual’s or institution’s reputation are becoming increasingly important.
Rachel Botsman identifies trust as a new currency in her TED talk and suggests how we should make our reputation play to our own advantage.
To summarize, your MUN can really get a competitive advantage over other conferences or MUNs as it builds trust among your MUN community. Your reputation can be checked within several clicks of the mouse and apart from a computer via the good ol’ word-of-mouth. Use this intertwined world of networks to leverage the reputation of your MUN to the maximum and to really and genuinely reach out to all those interested in your MUN.
