Graduates today are having the unique opportunity to apply for jobs around the world, enter different careers then their parents did and develop new paths for themselves. Nevertheless, the many opportunities young graduates face can be a burden too - more competition for jobs, increasing requirements for positions and absolute flexibility are required in a global market for the best jobs.
As MUNers, we are all too aware of the many opportunities but also challenges that we are about to enter after studying in the wide fields like International Relations, Law or Social Studies. But what is it that makes the MUN experience a valuable asset in the global and competitive job market of the 21st century?
This is simply what we do all day at conference, isn't it? Dealing with differences in communication styles, be it among delegates that simulate their role or be it when talking with all the different people from around the world. This is teaching you immensely - e.g. about intercultural differences.
Additionally, you learn how to communicate using Business English - a very valuable tool for later. Communication is the key to success - and this is certainly something that we learn doing MUN.
Leadership and Authority
Maybe not at your first MUN, but definitely at your second you will want to get the lead with your resolution and working papers. You will be convincing others to follow your approach and of course, deal with other authorities striving for just the same. Leading your team when organizing your conference is at least equally valuable - you have experienced first-hand what it means to deal with conflicts, to find solutions for problems and to be ready for whatever comes into your way. Being a leader in your committee is a tough burden and honor to take. But all these things teach you a valuable lesson: Leadership and Authority need to be gained, trust is a valuable asset not to be wasted and most of all, solving problems with and for your team is what it takes to be a good leader.
This is a not to be underestimated learning outcome from MUN. You were able to dress properly, to behave according to the MUN code of conduct and to express yourself in a polite and respecting way during session. This shows that you are ready for client contact and to deal with the demanding business environment you might find yourself in. Additionally, you learned (maybe the hard way...) that being on time, sticking to deadlines and reporting results is necessary for the MUN to run smoothly. Be it as a delegate, a chair or an organizer - you are keeping up a good spirit, you are motivated and every problems presents itself as another challenge you are able to deal with.
And then there is still so many more aspects you have practiced repeatedly during your MUN career...
- Team Work
and probably many more things.
Share your experiences in the comment section and if you have not started your MUN career - take the first step and apply for your first MUN. You can see, this is not only a fun activity, but one that shapes you professionally and personally for the labor market you find yourself in.
