Most of the MUNers start their journey when they are in either high school or university. These are the ages for us to shape our fields of interest and lean on the ones we select. After people get into the rush of the work life, they start to cut back on their leisure activities. We are aware of the fact that MUN is not a compulsory activity but an extra-curricular one and in that case it is nearly impossible to start doing it for a person who had never met it before. It seems like the most convenient stage of our lives to start attending MUN conferences is our student years. Is MUN just an occasion to entertain and party all night or is it something much more than that?
Unfortunately, with the surge in the number of MUN conferences being organized, the percentage of participants who are attending to conferences for having some fun with the others has also increased. It is really sad to have this kind of people under the umbrella of MUN community. They are incredibly harmful for the reputation of the brand name “Model United Nations” as well as for the delegation they are representing.
Coming back to the core of the topic; let us check why attending conferences is so important while you are student. I think that it is one of the best extra-curricular activities that a person do throughout their school life.
In today’s world it is very easy to keep in touch with people from different cities, countries and even continents. Being given such a chance, it would not be wise to waste it; go and get to know more people! MUN conferences provide us a variety of people each being unique. So, it would be a nice idea to meet new people. Who knows, maybe you will get friendships that will last for a lifetime or maybe you will meet the president of the future…
As the years pass, the odds of changing ourselves decrease because the behaviours become the habits. Also, people are better learners when they are younger. That is why, try to gather gains as many as you can before it gets too late.
