It is often said that getting paid to practice your hobbies is one of the finest forms of happiness. In the case of simulations, a rather expensive extracurricular activity, MUNers tend to look around for “all paid opportunities”. But as the years and the conferences pass by, there is a special group of people who “get paid to MUN”.Here is what you need to know what exactly these people do and why you should not be jealous of them.
*Disclaimer: regional focus is Europe, due to lack of data for other continents-should anyone wishes to enlighten the community about other regions, is more than welcomed to do so*.
A)Getting paid to chair: This is a well-known practice in Asia, not in Europe. It means that the members of the board receive a certain amount of financial remuneration for their conference time. It means that the person in question has to act in the most professional way possible, but does not happen all the time. Unfortunately, there are some stories and practices that increase the need for a strong framework for this process.
B)Getting accommodation (in some cases transportation as well) covered: This is the most common type of MUN privileges one may find. A lot of European conferences recognize the need to cover that option and they strive to do so, in the most creative ways possible ranging from couch surfing in Secretariat's houses/student dormitories to hotel offers. In this case, a sleeping bag is the ultimate MUN accessory. In the event, where the conference organizers can afford to subsidize transportation expenses as well even partially, this is an indication for a must attend conference since their finance/logistics appears to be running smoothly (or consistent luck with sponsorships)
C)All paid trip: Happens rarely, but there are conferences like RomeMUN in Italy covering everything. There are others as well, but they appeared to be limited to favoritism/nepotism, so no need to mention them.
The biggest risk with monetary offers is connected to the transparency and delivery system. It is rather sad to see conferences/MUN groups offering paid opportunities that turn out to be just click bait.
The above mentioned are the types of privileges that are possible in the stage of competitive ModelUNing, meaning that the participant is a part of the evolutionary ladder seen in the European circuit. The other type of “special” MUN area is the field of consulting Model UNing which can take place either online or in person. When online, an entity may open applications asking for experienced MUNers to contribute online material and in certain cases receive a small amount about it (not bigger than an Amazon coupon) or they offer distance based internships where one has the opportunity to work online with equally minded individuals into developing or codifying MUN material. In this case, the benefits include international connections and a rebooting of your biological clock, since time zones can be really tricky.
In person, we are talking about “professional MUN trainers”. Again, an entity (a school, a nongovernmental organization, a MUN society etc) opens a call for experienced MUNers to deliver workshops on certain types of MUN theory and receive certain credits themselves. In theory, the more types of these activities a “trainer” has under his/her belt, the higher the level of experience.
It goes without saying that everything I am talking about can happen for free as well and there are some brilliant cases of MUN articles that were written just for fun and not for a certain cause or auspices of any organization. Lastly, with regards to the quality of this material, nothing can subsidize personal experience on the matter; the ultimate benefit online voices can offer you is food for thought on certain MUN issues.
