MUNers, if you are interested in attending OVImun 2016, you'll find the Q&A bellow most useful. If you have any other questions, start the thread in the comment section bellow, or contact the organizers directly via website provided at the bottom.
1. When and where will OVImun conference happen?
The V Model United Nations of the University of Oviedo (OVImun 2016) will happen in Oviedo, the capital city of the Spanish region of Asturias, from the 14th to the 18th March 2016 (i.e. Moday to Friday). All the sessions will take place at the historical building of the “Junta General del Principado de Asturias”, the regional parliament.
2. How much is the conference fee for OVImun?
Thanks to the exceptional funding that we have obtained this year though several channels, there is no conference fee for OVImun 2016. Participants only have to pay for their accommodation if they do not live in Oviedo. However, and even if they do not choose our special accommodation offer, all the participants will enjoy free meals and social events every day!
3. How many participants will there be at OVImun conference?
We expect the attendance of around 125 people: 95 delegates, 12 Chairs, 8 journalists, 6 lobbyists and 5 other members of the organization team. This total number of participants has always been reached in past editions, and is fixed due to the size of the main chamber of the building of the regional parliament, where the sessions of our General Assembly are to be held.
4. How long will OVImun conference be?
OVImun 2016 will last from the 14th to the 18th March 2016 (i.e. Monday to Friday).
5. Is accommodation included in the conference fee? If not, what are my accommodation options?
As there is no conference fee, no accommodation is included in it. But do not panic! We offer the possibility of staying at the Astures Hotel (3*, bed&breakfast format), in the very center of Oviedo, for the whole week (i.e. six nights) and for only 80 €! Due to this exceptional offer, most of our participants choose to stay at the Astures Hotel each year.
However, if you do not like this option, there are plenty of accommodation options available in Oviedo, which is a pretty touristic city.
6. What committees will OVImun simulate?
We will simulate the following five organs of the United Nations:
General Assembly (topic: “Possible creation of a UN permanent intervention force”);
First Committee (DISEC) (topic: “Disarmament, demobilization and reintegration: a gender
Security Council (topic: “The conflict in the South China Sea”);
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (topic: “External debt: sustainability and development”);
Human Rights Council (topics: “Right to healthcare and pharmaceutical industry” and “Refugees:
issues and answers”).
The working language of the first four committees will be Spanish; that of the Human Rights Council will be English.
The sessions of the General Assembly will take place in the morning, and all the delegates (except from the members of the Human Rights Council) will participate in them. In the afternoon, delegates will attend their own committees (i.e. Security Council, Economic and Social Council or DISEC). Therefore, each delegate shall study two different topics: that of the General Assembly and the one of the committee that he or she has chosen.
As for the lobbyists, the working system will be the same: they will participate in the sessions of the General Assembly in the morning, and in the other committees in the afternoon.
The Human Rights Council will work in a slightly different manner, since both delegates and lobbyists will stay in this committee during the whole day. Thus, they shall study the two topics of the committee.
7. To what airport should I fly to when coming to OVImun?
You should try to fly to the Airport of Asturias, which is located in Avilés, a small city close to Oviedo. If there are not available flights to our region, you can come via the airports of Santander, La Coruña, or even Madrid.
We can even pay for your trip if you come from some countries of the European Union. Just ask us!
8.What does OVImun Schedule look like?
Even though our final schedule is not yet published, there are some things we can advance:
there will be two extraordinary opening and closing ceremonies, presided by some of the most
important political and academic authorities of our region; and
committees will work both in the morning and in the afternoon during at least three days.
However, there will be very exclusive social events every night for all the participants, including
dinners all around the city and parties… so do not expect to get bored at all. Indeed, many of our
participants take the challenge of being both the best delegates of their committees and of the social
pack really seriously!
9. What are 3 MUST SEE places in Oviedo?
As you might (or might not) know, Oviedo is a very old city and the capital of Asturias, the region where Spain was born many centuries ago. Among all the interesting places that you can visit here (and that we will also show you if there’s some time!) we can choose:
the gothic cathedral of Oviedo, built between the 13th and the 17th centuries, and located in the
medieval district of the city;
the Naranco Mountain, right next to Oviedo and where it is possible to visit some historic
monuments and to enjoy stunning views; and
- the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias and the Opera Palace.
10. What is the local currency?
The euro (€) is our official local currency. Naturally, it is possible to buy euros in Oviedo, but it is usually more convenient (and cheaper) to obtain them though your usual bank.
11. What is the application deadline for OVImun?
In order to participate in OVImun 2016 as a delegate, lobbyist or press team member, you shall apply before the 10th February 2016.
12. How do I learn more about the conference?
You will find all the necessary information about OVImun 2016 on our website http://(www.ovimun.es), or via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Ovimun-227436727283876/?fref=ts), Twitter (@Ovimun) or Instagram (ovimunoficial).
