MUNers, if you are interested in attending this year's GIMUN, you'll find the Q&A bellow most useful. If you have any other questions, start the thread in the comment section bellow, or contact the organizers directly via website provided at the bottom.
Our Annual Conference will take place from March 5th until March 11th, 2016, as usual at the UN Headquarters in Geneva. The delegates will have the chance to debate exactly where diplomats take some of the most important decisions in world politics at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The atmosphere there is magic.
2. How much is the conference fee for GIMUN?
The Conference fee is 205 CHF per participant. It includes meal vouchers and covers all the cultural and social events organized throughout the week, which is great!
3. How many participants will there be at GIMUN?
We expect to have around 250 delegates, but the number of the participants is around 300 if we include all members of the staff.
4. How long will GIMUN conference be?
The Annual Conference will last one week, including two days of weekend.
5. Is accommodation included in the conference fee? If not, what are my accommodation options? The conference fee covers all the delegates need during the debates, but doesn’t cover accommodation. We offer our best advice on how to find a cheap and nice accommodation in Geneva. In order to suit everyone’s needs, we will provide all the participants with a list of options they can choose from according to their preferences and budget.
6. What committees will GIMUN simulate?
This year we chose 6 committees: the Security Council, the Disarmament and International Security Committee, the Economic and Social Council, the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly Sixth Committee (Legal Committee) and finally the World Health Organization. In order to make communication smoother, interpretation is available in English and French for every committee as well as during the opening and closing ceremonies. Among the topics, we chose some of the hottest issues such as the impact of economic sanctions on vulnerable populations, individual privacy in the digital era, cyber warfare, access to medicines in developing countries and preventing terrorist empowerment. There will be a lot to debate and we are sure the delegates will manage to find brilliant resolutions.
7. To what airport should I fly to when coming to GIMUN?
The best option is flying directly to Geneva airport (GVA), which is only 7 minutes far from the city centre by train.
8. What does GIMUN Social Schedule look like?
To make sure participants will make the most of their MUN experience in Geneva, we organize cultural visits in Geneva and surroundings, visits to the beautiful lake and some Swiss historic places. During the week participants are invited to music nights, clubs, traditional restaurants and fun games to help them to relax, have fun and make awesome friends. Our logistics and cultural events teams are especially dedicated to the organization of such events that will make the experience in Geneva unforgettable.
9. What are 3 MUST SEE places in Geneva?
You can’t miss the lake and the beautiful water fountain (Jet d’eau), the Old Town and Bastions Park. Geneva is not a big city, but it offers something for everyone, be it outdoors activities, museums, shopping or delicious food (for chocolate and cheese lovers especially!).
10. What is the local currency and how much money should one bring to have a great time?
Swiss Francs (CHF) is the local currency. If you come from non-European countries, we especially recommend coming to Geneva with some cash (CHF) already in your pocket, it will make your life easier since you won’t have to pay additional fees.
We recommend to bring an extra 200 CHF (the equivalent of 210 USD) to be able to pay for more food and souvenirs. Excluding the cost of the accommodation, that can vary a lot according to individual choices, 200 CHF will be enough to cover all additional expenses.
11. What is the application deadline for GIMUN?
Applications for delegates will close on January 10th, 2016.
12. How do I learn more about the conference?
Our website gimun.org is always up-to-date with deadlines, application forms and instructions on how to apply. We recommend to follow us on our social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter, to make sure you don’t miss anything important about the event. We are always updating the website as well as posting on our social media to let you know every detail.
13. What is special about GIMUN?
GIMUN is more than an MUN. We are an NGO with special consultative status in the UN Economic and Social Council and we organize several different events throughout the year. In time, these activities have been developed in order to fulfill the ideal of GIMUN as a permanent platform that young people can use to discuss international affairs, the role of the United Nations and its values. We use our experience to make the MUN conference an amazing experience from every point of view.
Our MUN Conference is the perfect occasion to experience the life of a diplomat for one week, see how a day of debates at the UN headquarters in Geneva looks like and feel the magic in the wide and bright corridors of the historic Palais des Nations. With thousands of NGOs and International Organizations, Geneva is the city where important decisions on global issues are taken everyday. This is why there is no better place for an MUN.
