So now you’ve registered for the conference, what next? You’ll probably have some time until you get your committee and country. So until then what do you do?
For first time MUNers, I advise you to check out what Model UN is on the Internet, read up on it, check out Youtube videos on Moderated and Unmoderated Caucus, check out position paper samples, read up blog posts on Model UN etc. This will help you be more familiar with Model UN conference procedures and you will be quite prepared to face your first ever MUN conference.
For those who have already been to a few MUNs, be vigilant about when your country and committee allocations will be sent out to you. Once you receive your country and committee allocation, do start you research soon. You’ll feel like procrastinating when you see that you still have a few months for your position paper deadline. DON’T PROCRASTINATE! YOU WILL REGRET IT LATER! Cramming and scramming will just stress you out and you won’t be having time to organize a research binder or do your research properly.
You may win a Honourable Mention or even the best FPS, but had you done proper research and managed your time accordingly you might have even won the Best Delegate Award!
Don’t be a delegate who regrets their performance and feels that they could’ve done better if they had used their time accordingly, this will contribute to poor performance during the conference.
Be a confident delegate who holds the room in awe during their speeches, who manages to give out speeches that will be etched in the everyone’s minds for a long time, who radiates an aura of confidence and diplomacy all throughout the conference. To be such a delegate, proper preparation is a must.
Do research on your committee, your country, other countries, a general research on the topic and do keep yourself updated on the current affairs. USE YOUR TIME WISELY!
That’s the secret to being a memorable and amazing delegate! Happy MUNing!
