Hi, my name is Nea and I’m the Head of News and Media Padjadjaran Model United Nations 2016. I’m currently studying International Relations with my fellow committees in the midst of organizing PADMUN (should be the other way around but, hey, this is considered to be one of our learning sources, don’t you agree?☺)
Padjadjaran Model United Nations (PADMUN) is an annual event held by International Relations students from Universitas Padjadjaran. The event has been held for three consecutive years and this year will be its fourth, bigger, and better PADMUN. Padjadjaran Model United Nations is one of Indonesia’s biggest MUN—it started small but consistently gets bigger and better. The first PADMUN was held in 2013 and it was opened for Universitas Padjadjaran students only. On its second year in 2014, PADMUN widen the scope to West Java. In 2015, PADMUN spread it wings to national and it succeeded to attract participants from all over Indonesia and even the neighbor Malaysia. Finally, this year PADMUN decided to go international. We would like to keep the consistency of improvement as our foundation of being one of those Model UN that is worth-joining.
MUNPlanet: For the impatient ones, tell us in one sentence, why should everyone come to PadMUN 2016?
PADMUN is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious MUNs in Indonesia and as it evolved through the years, people from all over the world can participate in exchanging ideas and visions through our four intriguing councils.
MUNPlanet: This being your 4th edition says that you have made some seriosus MUN organizing miles so far. What is the one tip you would give to someone who is about to start their own MUN?
Because MUN is very popular right now and everybody seems to be organizing it – the key is to make your conference stand out; either with council choices, extra activities, exciting venues, or attractive promoting medium.
We strongly believe that every human on earth could have the role to the enhancement of world peace. We are all citizen of the world and it is our duty to obey with the universal principles in order to unite and maintain the peace among us. The future of the world is in our hand, future generation, to manifest that world peace is immensely attainable without war.
Padjadajaran MUN is going to conduct four innovative councils with the topic ranging from historical to visionary issues that urgently need to be resolved in a peace way and put the war as the very least option. We are expecting delegate to have their role as a world citizen to raise their voice as the world needs them to bring peace into existence.
MUNPlanet: Looking at your committee list, you’ve made some interesting choices. Can you briefly tell us why these committees and how have they evolved over the years?
As we learn through the years, to stand out in the sea of amazing MUNs being held all over Indonesia and all over the world, we need to attract future delegates with a fun, intriguing, and thought-provoking councils. We chose UN Women and Expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum because the issues covered in the aforementioned councils are hot right now and we are sure that all MUN enthusiasts have many thoughts to solve the issues that can be delivered in such councils. Paris Peace Conference was chosen to be simulated because we believe that it is representing the earlier effort of achieving world peace – thus we think it would be exciting to facilitate our delegates to revisit the day and see what they will do if they were in the world leaders’ shoes. Mars Constitution Convention was especially made to be one of PADMUN’s highlight. Fictional, visionary council is popular and well-liked nowadays that we proudly adapt the concept to make an exciting council that will simulate what it’s like to negotiate peacefully for colonizing a still-uninhabited planet.
MUNPlanet: The best Delegate award is a big deal for every MUNer. What’s the criteria that PadMUN has set for delegates in order to let them get their hands on this prestigious award?
Uhm, it’s confidential. (giggles). Just kidding. Best delegates should be able to stick with their assigned country’s correct stances, have a great negotiation skill, and the most important thing is rather than doing whatever it takes to snatch the title, a best delegate should deliver their interest in a very diplomatic way. (Like me trying to answer this question ☺ JK!)
MUNPlanet: Additional activities are one of the key factors for making a conference memorable. How will PadMUN make this happen and make your delegates come back for 2017 edition?
Well, because Bandung is a historical city (The first Asia-Africa Conference that was meant to pursue every country’s right to be independent was held in Bandung and the 69th commemoration last year was also held in Braga, Bandung – and PADMUN is also going to be held THERE! Isn’t that exciting to simulate world conference where actual world conference was held?!), we are offering the delegates a cultural field trip – so other than sightseeing in Bandung’s most preserved historical street, we are going to invite our delegates to visit Saung Angklung Udjo. Saung Angklung Udjo is the home for one of Indonesia’s traditional instrument that was granted UNESCO World Heritage. The delegates will be able to play the angklung together and buy interesting souvenirs to show off to their friends back home!
Also, our opening and closing ceremony plus social night will have exciting theme in a very hip place ☺
In the next five years, MUN will be very popular that you have difficulties deciding which one to participate in. But, in the next ten years, people might get too much of MUN they eventually be bored. However, in the next fifteen, MUN will regain its popularity because people realize how fun and important MUN was. Simulating negotiations to solve world problems, isn’t that one of the most exciting activities to do? Of course MUN will last!
MUNPlanet: Bandung is claimed to be Indonesia's center of fashion. Are you worried that some of your delegates will enjoy shopping a little bit too much?
We would not mind, to be honest. We might actually share them recommended place to shop (chuckles).
MUNPlanet: On the other note, we heard that Bandung has the best cuisine in whole Indonesia. What dishes are on the ‘must try’ list?
Bandung’s traditional snacks are especially to die for – for example Surabi; cake made of rice flour with syrup or various topping, Batagor; deep-fried fish cake with peanut sauce, and Bandrek; ginger with spices drink that is perfect for Bandung’s chilly night weather. You can google them to see how they look like and be ready for their mouthwatering appearance!
MUNPlanet: How can the role of new technologies and new communities such as MUNPlanet affect the future of MUNs?
MUNs will easily get maximum local and international coverage that many people from all over the world can meet and experience MUN in different countries. Wider networks, richer culture to encounter. Great work you’re doing, MUN Planet, and it will get better as technology develop, we believe. Keep going! ☺
MUNPlanet: Once PadMUN 2016 is over, what is the one sentence that you would like every delegate to leave with? PadMUN 2016 was … (complete the thought)
An amazing, challenging, and thought-provoking MUN experience but also a fun and interesting one, and I am looking forward to participate in future installment.
Nea, thank you for devoting your time to MUN Spotlight and telling us more about you and your conference. MUNPlanet is looking forward to your event and strongly advises all MUNers to check it out. Good luck and we wish you all the best!
