It was once predicted that in the year 2000 we would have flying cars and housecleaning robots. In fact, these beliefs were accurately portrayed in the popular 1960s television show The Jetsons. While we never got around to flying cars (not yet, at least!), we have seen some significant technological advances in the past few years that would have even the most staunch technophobes in awe of how far we’ve come. If there’s one thing that’s for sure, it’s that we have seen some technological breakthroughs that have significantly changed the energy landscape. It seems like every day, more and more electric car charging stations are popping up everywhere. What used to be something only forward-thinking techies were onto has now become commonplace among all the other regular gas stations. Electric cars are fun to drive and emit no tailpipe emissions, and can also be more cost-effective than owning a regular car. In addition to these benefits, electric cars also offer a greater diversity of fuel choices and reduce the need for petroleum, thus avoiding price spikes for the U.S.
Smart Energy at Home
Many homeowners are switching over to more technologically-advanced products within their homes, like smart thermostats, smart meters and LED lighting. Doing so can not only lead to saving for the consumer but also greatly conserves energy and is better for the environment. Smart meters, for example, allow individuals to read their own meter, as opposed to having someone come to their house and read it for them. This allows people to take a closer look at how the amount of energy they are using affects their utility bill and gives them the opportunity to adjust their lifestyle habits in order to save money. Smart thermostats are becoming more common in households as well, as they allow the individual to set the thermostat at a certain temperature and turn on and off at preset times.
Installing solar panels on the roofs of homes and commercial buildings are something that has been gaining popularity in the last few years. My childhood home was one of the first houses in our neighborhood to start using solar panels, and over time I noticed others following suit. Solar panels are meant to absorb sunlight naturally and provide heat, while also combating greenhouse gas emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuel. Recently, I have been seeing more and more buildings and homes utilizing solar panels, which is a huge step in the right direction when it comes to conserving energy. Installing solar panels on your home can also help decrease your energy bill and save you a significant amount of money in the long run.
