If you considered taking part in a Model UN (you should check out our eBook on how to become a Model UN delegate), or have spoken to an MUNer, then you have an idea of what’s in it for you: education in international affairs, new cool people, visiting a new country… And all of these sound good, and there are plenty of a reasons to attend an MUN. Here are a few reasons you will be aware of just once you’ve become an experienced MUNer.
1. Research skills

Yes, all of us do research, even on a daily basis. It can be following up on today’s economy and trying to be analytic about it or researching for your university. But in both cases we’re dealing with familiar topics and more than plenty of information. I’m not saying that researching for your Model UN conference topic is like an Indiana Jones scavenger hunt, and the very word UN should tell you something. What’s the first characteristic of the UN – it’s global. Researching such a wide field, as the world, is completely different than doing a school essay. The information is overwhelming and it’s not as easy to stay focused at your topic. But this is a skill MUN researching will develop for you to perfection.
2. Social intelligence
Is an ability that simply makes your life easier. Whatever you’re dealing with in life, it includes communicating with people. The modern age dictates that you can’t live like a rogue. Maybe you don’t deal with people in person as much, but even then you have the constant email and social network communication. Being communicative is a useful ability to have, but isn’t one you will develop in your room. Here’s where you’re new MUN friends come in. Of course it’s no one’s set plan to make friends so you can “practice” on them. But it’s undeniable that meeting new people with different backgrounds will make you have more patience for people and be better at stating your intentions.
3. Self-respect and Self-confidence
MUNs are not judged. You will not get a straight A if you follow the rules, and there aren’t “rules” as you’d imagine them to be. There aren’t set ways to how to be a success. It’s up to you. The amount of work you’ll put in, how you will present it, whether you will own it, the sky’s the limit. The commitment is to yourself, since the decision to participate was your own. And the award? Well let’s say that not failing your own expectations feels even better than meeting someone else's.
