MUN conferences are usually fun but, of course, there are some parts which do not entertain people that much. One of them may be the opening ceremonies. After attending a couple of MUN conferences, you observe that the opening ceremonies are predominantly similar: speeches from guest speakers, president or principal of the institution, the Secretary-General, the Director-General and sometimes followed by the introduction of “Rules of Procedure” and a simulation session for the newcomers. If you are participating conferences frequently, you will get enough of it after a while.
Of course, I am not totally against to opening ceremonies but
I can say that they are sometimes kept so long. I had been to a conference in
which opening ceremony was lasted for two hours. We all know that attention of
youngsters cannot be focused on a single topic for a long time; after 30-35
minutes focusing skill of one drops dramatically. What is important at this point
is to fine tune the length of the ceremony. Keep in mind that as the ceremony
gets longer it does not mean that it gets better. For your opening ceremony,
always think of unique ideas to find ways of keeping the audience entertained.
If your media team is capable of preparing video for the ceremony, ask for 3-4
short but funny videos that will be showed between the speeches of the
speakers. Each of us has one or two friends who are really good at playing
instruments. Ask them to perform 2-3 songs during the opening ceremony. Maybe,
you can make a quick pop-up quiz with the reward of a free ticket for the
social event. While doing so, do not make it serious and emphasize that this is
just for fun.
These are three options that have just come to my mind, you can find many more innovative ideas. Do not forget that there is always a chance of converting a dull opening ceremony into an enjoying one.
