What is SAIMUN?
Sub Saharan International Model United Nations (SAIMUN) is a five-day international relations simulation for both high school and university/college students that is held annually and this year it will be in Nairobi, Kenya. The international conference is attended by more than 1000 students from all over the world, in which they debate on the issues affecting the world.
What is the theme for the conference?
The theme is “Youth for Sustainable Development Goals 2030”. The delegates shall focus on Sustainable development Goal 4 “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning” with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa
OUR OBJECTIVE: The conference will allow students to use their creative, analytical, research and public speaking skills toward deliberating on Sustainable Development Goals, specifically:
·To promote a better understanding of the SDGs amongst participants.
·To increase knowledge on current international affairs, nations societies and cultures.
·To sensitize participants on the need for every nation to achieve the role of SDGs after fifteen years.
·To help create a positive perception of UN simulation and its value for development.
To foster learning and openness among the youth through Inter-Country interaction
Where is the conference taking place?
The conference will be happening at the United Nations Offices Nairobi (UNON). The United Nations Office at Nairobi, the UN headquarters in Africa, was established by the General Assembly in 1996. The office is headed by a Director-General, at the Under-Secretary-General level, serves as the representative office of the Secretary-General in Nairobi and performs representation and liaison functions with permanent missions, the host-country and other Governments, and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations in Nairobi, as well as other organizations of the United Nations system in Kenya
Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya, Africa. Home to thousands of Kenyan businesses and over 100 major international companies and organizations, including theUnited Nations Environment Program(UNEP) and theUnited Nations Office at Nairobi(UNON), Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture.
Nairobi is situated between the cities of Kampala and Mombasa. TheNgong Hills, located to the west of the city, are the most prominent geographical feature of the Nairobi area.Mount Kenyais situated north of Nairobi, andMount Kilimanjarois towards the south-east. Both mountains are visible from Nairobi on a clear day.
Nairobi has many parks and open spaces throughout the city. Much of the city has dense tree-cover and plenty of green spaces. The most famous park in Nairobi isUhuru Park. The park borders the central business district and the neighborhood Upper Hill. Uhuru (Freedom inSwahili) Park is a centre for outdoor speeches, services, and rallies. Most importantly, it is a recreational site for family relaxation. Nairobi is home to several museums, sites, and monuments. TheNairobi National Museumis the country's national museum and the largest in the city. It houses a large collection of artifacts portraying Kenya's rich heritage through history, nature, culture, and contemporary art.
Who will be participating?
Student participants will be invited from institutions of higher learning and high schools across the world. Guest speakers from the private sector, government institutions and educational institutions will also be invited during the opening and closing ceremony to foster the spirit of public participation accountability. Already confirmed for attendance are delegates from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, Ghana, India, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Rome Model United Nations, Delhi Model United nations, just to name a few.
