I recently had the opportunity to have an online interview with one of my favorite leaders in Botswana. As you will see from her interview responses, Lillian is an intelligent, passionate, capable, high achieving, trend-setter who has brought about numerous developments to her community.
I had the privilege of serving with Lillian as a Global Shaper of the Gaborone Hub for several months in 2013 and 2014. Her dedication to serving humanity and her contribution towards securing a bright future for Botswana and Africa are both applaudable and inspiring.
I am excited to share a series of brief responses that she provided to a few questions that I posed to her.
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY (ABOUT 50-100 WORDS)
Lillian Moremi from Botswana is passionate about education and youth development. She lives by the great Nelson Mandela’s saying that Education is the most powerful tool that you can use to change the world. A graduate from the University of Cape Town with a Degree of Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accounting. I strongly believe that young people are the solution to Africa's sustainable future and hence it is important to develop and nurture young people to be the best they can be.
As the first Motswana from Botswana to visit Antarctica on an International Leadership Expedition, this experience that has not only proved to me that indeed anything is possible if you put your mind to it but also encouraged a lot of young people to never give up on their dreams as I continue to reach out to young people through my motivational talks. This expedition has been a great eye opener as I have met amazing young people from across the globe who are doing great work to uplift their communities. I hope to continue to partner with young people all over the world to help advance development work in Africa.
PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT AND PAST PROFESSIONAL WORK.
I am currently the Manager (Botswana) of Dūcere Foundation developing passionate learners and leaders working with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Education, regional educational directors, local councils, school heads, parents teachers associations, teachers and mentors.
WHAT LEADERSHIP ROLE DO YOU PLAY IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
I am the founder of Botswana Student Network Society working with a group of dedicated young people disseminating information and opportunities available for the youth in order to achieve academic excellence and self-responsibility.
I am also a member of Botswana National Youth Council, President of Gaborone Toastmasters Club and mentor young people on issues of career and personal development.
WHY DID YOU TAKE UP THE ABOVE POSITIONS?
I always want to make a positive change in whichever space I find myself in seeing that I also want to be part of the solution to Africa's challenges I constantly encourage myself to get involved and be an active citizen in encouraging young people to realize their potential as Africa's future relies on us.
WHAT ROLE SHOULD THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION PLAY IN SECURING A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR BOTSWANA?
One of my favourite sayings is that Every young person should always ask what is it that I can do for my country or government instead of what can the government do for me. Young people should understand and appreciate the importance or their contribution to nation building in whichever way no matter how small or big. We should not be a passive generation, instead we should take interest in the running of our country so that we can have a positive contribution to the future of the country. If we dont who will- our elders are leaving us a legacy to look after. My Botswana, My Responsibility. My Pride.
WHICH UN VALUE DO YOU EMBRACE THE MOST IN YOUR DEALINGS WITH FELLOW YOUNG LEADERS, AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE PASSED ON TO FUTURE LEADERS?
Education. Like the great Nelson Mandela once said Education is the greatest weapon one can use to change the world. We should ensure every individual has access to education from pre-primary to higher education.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF URBAN YOUTH IN TODAY’S SOCIETY?
To ensure they advocate for the needs of the youth in the rural or disadvantaged communities. To ensure they actively participate in the running of the country including taking interest in politics and ensuring there is knowledge sharing with youth in the outskirts to further empower other youth.
I wish Lillian all the best with all of her future endeavors and I look forward to hearing more about the exceptional work that she will do in the future.
