Today, I'd like to tell you how is life as student in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Firstly, I'll tell you some universities you can apply into. Then, some student's life you'd probably spend roughly 4 years as a college student.
Yogyakarta is well known in Indonesia as a city of students. Despite its small area, according to Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education data, there are approximately 106 higher education institutions taking place in Yogyakarta, one of the highest ratio in Indonesia. Recent high school graduates from all over Indonesia (and foreign) are travelling here to enter their college years. I myself am native, but most of my college friends are coming from outside. In my department alone I'd probably say we, native Jogjakartans, only comprise 1/5 of the total students at best.
Chapter 1: University in Yogyakarta
Without further due, here are some big universities in Yogyakarta:
(Disclaimer: Universitas means University in English)
Universitas Gadjah Mada
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is arguably the most famous as it is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Indonesia. It has more than 30,000 students aboard. Indonesia current President, Joko Widodo is UGM graduate.
Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY)
This is my campus (promotion alert). UMY is a private Islamic-university established by Muhammadiyah, a well-known Islamic organization. It has more than 10,000 students
There are a lot of other private universities you can choose as well. There are Universitas Islam Indonesia, Universitas Katholik Atma Jaya Yogyakarta, Universitas Sanata Dharma, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and the list goes on. Many of them were built by their religious foundation, respectively.
Chapter 2: Students Life
Being a city of students, Yogyakarta has a lot to offer. In previous posts, I have explained why living in Yogyakarta is cheap and it has many sightseeing. I'm just gonna slightly extend it into some of student activities in general and night activities you can do here.
Student activities you can do here are various. You may join students body within and outside the campus, join volunteerism act, participating in various competitions, as well as initiating new initiatives. What's important is, Yogyakarta provides great environment for you to develop yourself in multitude way.
If you're looking after night outs, you can find a lot of entertainment as well. Night clubs, malls, cafe, night culinary, night festival are very well preserved here.
