We might descent from Vikings, but we get inspired by Cicero, not Harald Blue Tooth when it comes to debating. Being one of the top 20 countries when it comes to alcohol consumption and with a voting turnout between 80-90% at every election, you can probably imagine how much debating it happening in, as well as outside, of the booths at the bodegas in Denmark. Our youth parties are active and even gets a pretty good amount of media coverage too, so as you can imagine, we raise a lot of engaging young people, eager to try out their skills with debating. With that being said, we also have a tendency to create our own danish versions of a lot of the international offers in this field. Add that to a generally politically engage youth, and one can easily imagine how Model UN hasn’t been super necessary throughout time.
Luckily, though, some danish internationally minded people discovered the wonders of MUN not too long ago, resulting in us now not only sticking two danish role play exercises with politics but also having a few international MUN conferences on both high school and university level. In this post, I will introduce you to the ones I know, as these are the only ones I can give you my personal view on, however, I can’t guarantee that these are the only ones existing, as many places slowly start gaining more and more interest in this area. Furthermore I have also chosen to exclude the conferences where you have to be invited to participate, as my goal is to encourage and inspire you guys to potentially make your way to the (now 2nd) happiest country in world, to discuss how to make it impossible to make such lists in the future, with almost nothing but happy nations. But lets being:
Danish Model United Nations
DanMUN is not only a conference but also an umbrella organization for Danish Model United Nation conferences, meaning the work of DanMUN extends far beyond the annual conference. That being said, DanMUN is not the place to expect an enormous conference, but instead a smaller, but thereby also more intense conference, as it has only been the security council that has been simulated until now. Running with double delegations and a few guest countries, DanMUN makes a small but thereby also exclusive conference for mainly University students, but also High School students with a level that can challenge their older counterparts.
CBS Model United Nations
Copenhagen Business School’s MUN club hosts an annual three days conference at the campus. This year it is held at the end of April, with a fee of only 100 DKK/$15 for participation. CBS is filled with very internationally engage young people from all over the world and being the 13th best business school worldwide, you can expect a very high level of debate at their conference as well.

Being the biggest High School MUN in Scandinavia, BIGMUN doesn’t need much more introduction. Run by the High School Birkerød Gymnasium’s MUN broad, BIGMUN is always a great success and a lot of fun to participate in as a delegate. The student team is very dedicated and manage to organize an extraordinary conference year after year.
Located in Espergærde, not too far from Birkerød, is Espergærde Gymnasium. Another high school with another MUN conference, which has a great deal of success as well, following in the footprints of their big brother BIGMUN. Espergærde was an absolute pleasure to me, back when I was in high school. The perfect mix between serious international crisis’ and conflicts, and a lot of fun and social activities - making sure you would leave with a lot of new friends.
I don't have any personal experience or reviews from anyone in my circles on MUNNY, however, a former member of their executive board contacted me and described it as follows: "Located on the eastern coast side city of Funen, MUNNY attracts students from all around the world to the annual MUN conference hosted in Nyborg. With 99% of organizers being students at the IB Department of Nyborg Gymnasium, it is a conference that is described to be fun and fair, where you not only broaden your knowledge about International Relations but where you also leave the city with lots of memories and friends from all corners of the world."
So now you have a brief introduction to the MUN’s of Denmark! Hope to see you at one of them soon!
