As you participate in more and more MUN, you would have certainly faced various kind of MUNers. However, sometimes it can be quite difficult to talk and negotiate with overly ambitious delegate, who may or may not, ruined the spirit of diplomacy, since many of them do not want to compromise at all and force everyone to follow them thoroughly. Thus, based on my own personal experience I'd like to share some thoughts regarding how do we tame them down.
DISCLAIMER: It might not suit to everyone; being ambitious in itself doesn't always mean bad, admit it, many delegate just happen to crave for winning.
1. See his/her pattern!
Ambitious delegate usually has patterns. It means that they tend to have certain type of behavior that is repeated i.e. who he/she approaches, how does he/she convince (force) other delegate to follow them. Basically we cam sum it up into 2 (two) major type, which are the target and type of movement. Through this way, we can map them. Note that this is easiest when the ultra ambitious delegate in your council is only one or a few, the more they are, the harder it is to map them individually
2. Use their weaknesses as your main weapon!
Many of them would show some seriously less than desirous behavior, which attracts dislikes from other delegate. Some of them may shout to the other, some others may jump from one to another block quickly, showing no stance. After you identify their biggest weaknesses, you can use them as your guns! Easy? It sounds so, but in practice it requires you to have a deep and thorough analysis of them.
3. Follow their target!
Make it hideous and insidious, pardon the pun!
They tend to use newcomer (counting that you are an experience MUNer as well) and more often than not, they would never want to talk to you directly, but instead he/she will try to steal your friends. As someone's saying "In MUN, there will be a lot of backstabber, a good delegate backstab back" You need to have extra patience in order to steal them back, even steal their's. Do a personal approach to each of them in any possible circumstance. You may begin from the "gray" allies, all the way to his/her closest ally, the one he/she works on the Working Paper or Draft Resolution with.
Don't forget that in previous steps, you have already identified their pattern as well as most disliked behavior, time to use them! It might sound harsh, but it is almost obligatory to use their worst behavior to convince other delegates not to be with him/her. Voila! You have just triggered their internal hatred and anger over that ambitious delegate.
4. Confront them!
Ensure that you have gathered enough alliance (50:50 at least), then declare your alliance explicitly! This way, it will put yourself into the spotlight and be noticed by that ambitious delegate. Confront them on why they have been showing less than cooperative behavior, use people's anger as your main fuel, make sure that in both moderated and unmoderated caucus you keep stabbing them from the front, side and back, oh pardon again for the pun!
5. Tame them!
At certain point, when you think it's already sufficient (usually after they hit certain stress and pressure point), you may begin approaching them personally. When they think they are weak enough, it is almost certain that they will accept your presence and be willing to talk with you. Use this brilliant time to negotiate with them, and as you have higher bargaining position, make sure that your ideas are less compromised compared to their's!
Voila! You have just defeated them, won your DR and won your best delegate!
As you may read throughout, yes most likely you are an ambitious delegate trying to tame another ambitious delegate! Congrats on winning it!
