In the public education the undergraduate studies last for three years where the domestic student pays around two hundred dollars per academic year and after another two years of master programs ensues that has to be completed to finish the degree properly. This last one requires a nine hundred dollar payment for the academic year. The University of Tirana is organized with faculties and these faculties have buildings distributed around the city. Each faculty has its own departments. My friend studies at the faculty of natural sciences of the University of Tirana and it has eight departments. Those being department of biology, biotechnology, physics, informatics, chemistry, industrial chemistry, mathematics and applied mathematics.
Besides the public university there are private universities. They have names such as UET, European university of Tirana or University of New York Tirana to name a couple. Tuition fees for these universities are higher and they vary from two thousand Euros to four thousand Euros per academic year. These universities are well equipped with the necessary facilities for satisfactory modern studies. They have libraries, computer labs, athletic areas and they claim to offer an exciting experience. Their websites are able to convey the information and one can also find booklets for the given academic years. These private campuses do not usually offer accommodation. Students opt for personal arrangements, where they rent apartments and share costs through communal living. Their part of the bill for rent could vary anywhere between one hundred to three hundred dollars a month. That is not cheap for the local worker who makes on average four hundred to five hundred dollars a month from the wage.
Foreign students do come to study in Albania but they must know the language. There are however many Italians who come and study in Tirana because of the ZKM, a university established for exclusively medicine and dentistry studies. An Albanian can study there after he or she has mastered some level of the Italian language so to follow the lectures. The students of this university whether they are Italians or Albanians usually work in the many Italian call centers that are in Tirana. These call centers do serve to the Italian consumer.
