Well, since this post will be a bit more technical, I will spare you of random images and I'll try to get across as much information as possible in the most efficient way. I will divide this theme in two posts because our system is an absolute car wreck. At the end, I'll also materialize everything I have said about the educational system in Portugal by saying what were my options when I had any.
So, to get started, in Portugal, you start going to school in the year you turn six. Before actual school start, some families enroll their kids in nursery (zero to two years) or kindergarten (three to five) so that they start spending the day with other kids, while other families send the kids over to the grandparents’ house or they just stay with the parent(s) at home, which is kind of uncommon in Portugal.
Schooling in Portugal has three main divisions:
Básico (Basic Education)
Secundário (Secondary Education)
Superior (Higher Education)
Ensino Básico is divided into three Ciclos/ Cycles. The Ministry of Education were never really inventive since they just names it the first, second and third:
- Goes from our 1st grade until 4th;
- It's our 5th and 6th grade;
- Goes from the 7th to the 9th grade.
Happy holidays and remember to enter 2017 with your right foot!
