Ruthless to say that individuals are living within a utopian world, that is, only, governed by virtue and absolute truth. In fact, those individuals are basically puppets. Puppets who have their minds washed clean by the ultimate weapons; Hegemony, ideology, and especially, media (Since it puts every theory usedinto practice). Thus, there is a secret bond that highlights what keeps them all together; “The discourse of power”.
Since the dawn of the modern times, human societies have never seized to give different terminologies to what is called; “ Norms and rules”. These latters are, undoubtedly, considered to be with a high importance, due to the fact that they legitimize and legalize the common socio-political concept of every society… Maybe, the most recognizable terminologies that are worth mentioning are; Hegemony, ideology, and their main container: “media”.
Actually, it is important to try to realize the true meaning of “Hegemony”! … This term was, firstly, introduced by the far-known Italian Marxist philosopher; “Antonio Gramsci”. According to “The Routledge Dictionary of Literary Terms”, the latter was defined as this; “…The term hegemony as defined in conventional discourse signifies simply power … exercised by creating the belief in the majority of people that power is prerogative…” In other words, hegemony gives the right to any targeted ruling class to take hold of any subordinate individuals and to claim its “natural” and “ justified” will over them. But that could not be all!
One cannot deny the existence of a sort of a consent that bonds every member of a specific group in order to reach the common goals that have been already set. Moreover, within each society, there is a certain model that has to be followed, for the creation of a balanced community; On the one hand, the existence of the “Superstructure” (Education, religion, politics, media, etc…). And on the other hand, there is the “base” (Relations and means of productions). According to Gramsci, and to Karl Marx before him, there should be an alliance between these two terms because they are, highly, intertwined. In other words, “organization” is the key term to synchronize between the political party and the social classes (The term is defined as the “Historical Bloc”).
This whole dilemma does not, only, concern the theoretical part (Hegemony), it, usually, requires practice and, specifically, “ideology”…. Regarding this matter, “The Routledge Dictionary” mentioned that; “Traditionally, ideology refers to the system of ideas used by the ruling group in society to justify its dominance.” In fact, one can build different theories on this definition because, after all, the enigma lies within the fact that one cannot escape the labyrinth of ideology, even though it is not imposed on us; People, subliminally, believe in its codes due to the power of language and the appropriation of the literary texts. If one can have a closer look, ideology is everywhere! …. “Big brother is watching you!! “. In this regard, the “discourse of power” that have been proclaimed by “Michal Foucault” is, highly, embedded in the core of ideology; it attributes to this latter a strong meaning of legitimacy. However, whether people like it or not, “Ideology is our normal consciousness.”
TV, radios, internet, etc …. They, always, broadcast the politicians and businessmen’s speeches, non-stop (24/7). How far can it go? Why media, specifically? How twisted is the role of media? Too many rhetorical questions that may wonder in people’s minds… It is, often, asserted that media is the source of “plain” truth and it provides its users with the whole picture of any given events. Alas! It is, only, believed by the simple minded persons since media is, exactly, perceived as the Pandora box; It, definitely, broadcasts a specific agenda with a specific ideology. In other terms, it serves the claims of the ruling class, it brainwashes the masses, and it offers falsehood as an alternative to truth (linguistic discourse) … However, if one may consider media in another approach, it is true that it is all related to the power relations. Yet, for those who are aware enough of the common ideology( Intellectuals), they can, easily, pick up the other side of the coin and transmit it to the population, so that they can put an end to those ruling powers ( even if it is partially).
In conclusion, Hegemony and ideology are, undeniably, the most powerful tools that may ever exist on earth, for those who have lust for dominance and control… In order to accomplish this mission, practice is needed through the use of media; Religion, politics, economy, etc… They are all the ultimate ingredients of a true system of thoughts, which is, basically, created for the purpose of showing the misleading intentions of mankind.
