In the following weeks I will be writing about my MUN experiences, my thoughts, inspirations, as well as the best and not-so-good moments of each MUN I have attended. Today I will start with my first ever MUN experience in my homeland : Algeria.
The AMUN has taken place last December in Algiers, it was the first edition and lasted for 4 amazing days. Let me tell you how it all started :)
Back in April 2014, I have participated to the Youth Mediterranean Dialogue in Madrid, which is a simulation of the NATO-North Africa summit. I was a representing Canada in the Political and Partnership Committee. Let me be honest, when applying to this conference, I had absolutely no idea of what it was about! But finally, it turned out as a beautiful experience that actually introduced me to the MUN world. Indeed, during this conference I have met many MUNer from Morroco, Spain, France and Serbia, I was actually hearing them talking about MUNs all the time and at some point I felt really left out. I ended up asking " What the hell are you talking about? " and tada... Now I had finally understood what it was all about.
Going back home, I decided to do some researches to know more about these conferences. For that, the MUNPlanet was very useful in providing me a clearer insight in the topic so I decided to sign up but didn't do much about it afterwards.
However, I was wondering: How popular are these conferences? Is there any in my country? ( Without me knowing it, please noo! ) Why don't organize one myself ? (Not very realistic knowing that I am currently based in the other side of the Mediterranean) I just found the very concept appealing and was thrived by the idea of the Algerian Youth going into such a project.
During summer, I decided to apply to the North African MUN, but dropped out at the end because my university classes started on the same period.
One day in september, I opened up my FB Page and searched for " Algeria Model United Nations" to see if it existed, and guess what? IT DID! And the first edition ever was scheduled for December.
I was extremely pleased to see that, and didn't hesitate to apply as soon as the Application Period started.
Then everything went pretty fast and all of a sudden... Bam! I was representing the Islamic Republic of Iran in the UNSC of the first edition of the Algeria Model United Nations.
Let the fun begin...
