Briefly introduce the conference and the team behind it.
OxIMUN 2018 is the 16th annual edition of the Oxford International Model United Nations conference. OxIMUN is one of the largest and most prestigious Model UN conferences in Europe and runs over the course of 3 days. This year the conference is to be held on the 26th to the 28th of October in some of the most beautiful locations in Oxford. Arguably, there is no other conference like us: we may host debates in gorgeous 15th-century era rooms, but our committee sessions remain topical and fast-paced. We have handpicked some of the best chairs in the world to lead our chambers, and we are excited about the topics that they have carefully selected for 2018’s conference. This year, we not only have a spectacular formal Ball hosted in the Ashmolean Museum, the first University Museum in the world, but we also have numerous Friday event options for our delegates’ first evening in Oxford.
This year’s Secretariat is one of the most diverse and experienced organizing committees in the history of the conference. We are all members of the Oxford University United Nations Association. Between us, we have attended over 160 MUN conferences, and have organized around 18. Although perhaps what truly sets us apart is our collective belief that MUN is an exceptional educational tool and that our delegates should not only get an unforgettable experience out of the weekend, they should also learn and be inspired by the debates themselves.
Briefly present the new committees/elements of this edition.
This year’s conference has a distinct focus on ensuring that our delegates have a fantastic conference experience, both before and during the event itself. All the pre-conference logistics has been streamlined into one system, and we have carefully planned out the release of substantial academic packs to assist with delegation training and position papers.
The unique committees that OxIMUN has become known for over the years have also returned, in the form of the Belt and Road Initiative Forum and the International Telecommunications Union. Both have been chosen in order to enable our delegates to discuss controversial and relevant topics in a more specialized, unique forum. This year’s Joint Cabinet Crisis is also shaping up to be one of the best in years- based upon The First Crusade, the three-cabinet crisis is both exciting and well-crafted.
With regards to our socials, this year we have an even bigger and better version of the Ashmolean Ball, one of our trademark OxIMUN events, hosted in the Ashmolean Museum on the Saturday's event. However, this year, the Ball is supplemented by a variety of Friday evening welcome events, both academic and social, followed by a fully-fledged Club Night. Both our Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony are accompanied by brilliant guest speakers, who are honoring the conference with their presence this year, including Angela Kane and Lyse Doucet.
Why would someone choose Oximun?
Someone would choose OxIMUN because we provide both an academically challenging debate setting and an invigorating conference experience. With an eleven-person secretariat, every element of our conference receives special attention; from our Study Guides to our landmark ceremonies.
OxIMUN remains one of the most prestigious tertiary MUN conferences in the world, and we play host to some of the best chairs and delegations in the MUN community. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Delegates leave at the end of the weekend with a love for MUN, lifelong friendships, and a truly astonishing conference experience.
Our Ashmolean Ball remains a highlight and an unforgettable evening. Arguably the best MUN social of any conference around the world, delegates get to wander the halls of the world-famous Ashmolean Museum, sipping cocktails and dining on five-star canapes.
Do you believe that MUNing has been affected by Brexit and if so how?
MUNing has indeed been affected by Brexit, however, currently, we can only see the effects on a purely academic level, as it influences the topics set for committees, as well as the general flow of debate.
As the Brexit process moves forward, MUN conference organization may be affected, as delegates from European nations may require visas for UK MUN conferences. However, as we do not yet know the specifics of the Brexit agreement, we cannot truly anticipate the extent to which Brexit may affect MUNing in the future.
