Platon School Model United Nations (PS-MUN) is a three day Junior High School/ High School conference taking place on Friday March 3rd to Sunday March 5th, 2017 on the premises of Platon IB World School in Athens, Greece.
MUNPlanet: MUN Planet and PSMUN have collaborated in the past. Did you miss us? What were some of the highlights of last year’s PS-MUN?
Last year, our special conference topic concerned Migration, a prevailing issue in world news for the last couple of years. In the 6th PSMUN, over 700 students from 11 different countries attended our conference. A highlight from the 3 day conference was a video that was prepared with the views of delegates on the refugee crisis.
MUNPlanet: PS-MUN participants will have the chance to build strong new friendships that extend across the globe. How essential would you say that networking is when it comes to success?
We have found from previous experience that networking is a very effective resource that has assisted in connecting Model UN communities.
MUNPlanet: This is the 7th annual PS-MUN which means that it already has a rich history behind it. Could you tell us more about PS-MUN’s beginning?
Platon School has been participating in MUN conferences since 2008. From these participations, we learned what it takes to organize an MUN conference. We finally made the attempt in February of 2011, with a small group of very motivated high school students and a supportive School Administration, we put together the 1st PS-MUN conference with the participation of approximately 300 delegates.
MUNPlanet: PS-MUN has 4 General Assembly Committees and 6 Specialized Agencies. How did you decide on these and are there some that you didn’t include, but plan to in the future?
This year we decided to not include the Environmental Committee in the GA and place it as a Non GA which was renamed “Environmental Commission” This was done primarily because of time constraints and provide more debate time for 4 GA committees.
MUNPlanet: This year’s Special Committee deals with the Eradication of Poverty and Hunger. What was the motivation behind picking this topic specifically instead of some others?
We considered various global issues related to Social, Political Economic and Environmental Issues that affect the world as a whole: Poverty and Hunger continues to remain a popular topic in world news.
MUNPlanet: Poverty and Hunger are both very old concepts. We’ve been trying to eradicate them forever. But, do you think that we will ever actually succeed?
If we were only to discuss issues that we could find solutions for, we wouldn’t have MUN conferences. The primary purpose of Model UN is to give students the opportunity to be aware of these important global issues that have yet to be solved. Unless students know about the issues they wouldn’t be able to resolve them.
MUNPlanet: One of the aims of PS-MUN is to sensitize students’ awareness on issues that affect the world as a whole. What is the current state of students’ awareness of these issues in the world?
From our experience, we see that students are very much aware of the problems that exist beyond their social community. They are exposed to these issues not only through Model UN but in other subjects they are taught in school.
MUNPlanet: Students benefit from attending MUNs in many ways. What are some benefits that they will get from PS-MUN? Why should every student attend PS-MUN?
There are countless benefits for students that attend MUN conferences. Students will adopt valuable leadership skills they will use throughout their lives especially in employment positions in the future. At PS-MUN students will have the opportunity to enhance these skills in a very friendly and welcoming environment. The most important fact that we have learned from past conferences, is that students leave PS-MUN more confident with a sense of personal accomplishment and they are very keen on coming back to our conference the following year.
MUNPlanet: Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities so there must be plenty of things to see and do. What are some sights you would say are a MUST SEE?
There are many places in Athens that students would be thrilled to experience during their stay: A “Must See” is Monastiraki square, The Acropolis, Parthenon, Ancient Roman Agora (Market Place) ! There is a variety of museums with free entrance and you can always arrange a small day trip close to the capital city (Sounio, Epidavros, Nafplio).
MUNPlanet: How can the role of technology and new communities such as MUNPlanet affect the future of MUNs?
MUNPlanet gives the opportunity for students around the globe to be informed about international conferences that take place worldwide. Social media networking like facebook and twitter also have proven to be effective concerning the promotion of Model UN conferences. In this manner many conferences will most certainly become known to all nations.
MUNPlanet: In the end, what is one message that you would like to send to all of the people interested in attending?
Traveling to Greece for the first time is a life-altering experience. A combination of Greece’s unique culture and spectacular landscapes alone, are enough to amaze any traveler and leave them with the most beautiful memories. We guarantee that our conference will be even more innovative and exciting from previous years and we aim to make PS-MUN the best experience that delegates will not soon forget!PS-MUN team, thank you for devoting your time to MUN Spotlight and telling us more about you, your school and your conference. MUNPlanet strongly advises all MUNers to check it out. Good luck and we wish you all the best!
