Once we started feeding our dogs raw dog food full time (no more kibble), I started to wonder about the dog treats we were feeding them. I was at the pet store, buying cat food and dog treats and I was stumped.
Can the dogs have cookies or do I need to buy something healthier? When can I feed them treats? If the treats are “cookies” can the dogs have them when there’s still raw food in their system? Will the treats slow digestion, making them sick?
The answer to all of my questions is, of course, yes and no.
- Yes, they should get healthier treats.
- No, the treats won’t slow their digestion of raw as long as I follow the feeding guidelines (i.e. don’t give them treats as a meal).
Not long ago, I wrote a post on Keep the Tail Wagging about reading the ingredients on a bag of kibble, comparing a popular grocery store brand with a premium pet store brand.
I decided to use that same logic with the treats we fed our dogs and was excited to see that there are loads of healthier treats out there for our dogs.
I no longer go for the Old Mother Hubbard dog treats, instead, I’m looking for something that’s all natural, has no ingredients sourced in China, and that our dogs love. Here’s my list of the best dog treats for our raw fed dogs. Also, check best dog carriers and strollers
Beams by The Honest Kitchen – these are made from catfish (which I love) and are super smelly. If you can’t tolerate the fish smell, who cares – your dogs will go nuts. You should see our dogs fall in line, sitting excitedly in front of me when I open the bag of Beams.
Primal Raw Marrow Recreational Bones – I was nervous about feeding our dogs raw bones, because I was told that they’ll break our dog's teeth or they could get stuck in their digestive tract.
So I reached out to other dog parents who fed bones to find out which ones would be a good start for our dogs. We feed them beef rib bones. They love them, they're able to break down the bones into bites, and they had no adverse effects. They have ground bone in their food, so raw bones are just a treat.
Nature’s Variety Frozen SweetSpots Sweet Potato & Molasses Dog Treats - these are not only great on hot days or just a fun treat for our dogs; but we give them SweetSpots (Sweet Potato or the Peanut Butter flavor) when they have upset tummies, after a long car ride, and as a treat after the veterinarian appointment or on stressful days (thunderstorms or fireworks).
Jones Natural Chews 19 Piece Variety Bag - I love this variety pack by Jones Natural Chews because it’s so affordable. If we were to buy the stuff in this bag for our dogs, it would cost 2x as much or more.
If you’ve given your dog something like hooves or bully sticks, then you know how lovely they smell; but it’s great for cleaning their teeth, it occupies them with a treat that they love, and it gives me a much-needed break in a house full of dogs.
I’m also always looking for brands that make all natural treats with no ingredients sourced in China. So far, my favorite is Scout & Zoe’s
I’m always on the look out www.cogopet.comfor what to feed our dogs now that they’re on this new diet. So what do you give your dogs now that they’re eating raw dog food?
